There is no vision so vast, intimate, or out there that it cannot be communicated perfectly with the right words. I write for corporations that want their kids to like them and independent creators who want their parents to respect them. With an artistic background, an eye for structure, and a compulsion for wit and lyricism, I've tended to succeed where corporate meets consumer and where independents strive for high levels of creativity and professionalism. I employ color, elegance, intelligence, humor, wordplay, a few winks, and much hard work to ensure my clients are happy. My unique angle stems from my dual areas of expertise: on the one hand, I am a well-disciplined agency writer, comfortable delivering complex work on time and within budget; on the other, I am a musician, freelancer, and contrarian who can transition seamlessly into poetry, wit, irreverence, and pithy commentary. Clients most often bring me in to: —Ghostwrite memoirs and personal transformation stories that feel rich, human, and voice-driven (including for Olympic athletes, founders, and creatives). —Write brand scripts, keynote speeches, and web copy that blend sharp messaging with emotional punch. —Craft children’s books—sometimes rhyming, often offbeat, always memorable—with emotional clarity and playfulness. Every project is different—but if the story matters, I’m in. Upwork clients have said of their experience working with me (taken from my testimonials) … —“I must say, he is nothing short of remarkable. Steve is not only incredibly talented but also an amazing human being.” —“I have yet to ask him for help on a project that he hasn’t vastly improved the idea. He is a testament to the writing profession.” —“Steve is a gift of a human. I'm glad to have met and worked with him. He truly has exceptional talent.” —“Steve did a fantastic job on a challenging assignment.” —“Usually, when I work with freelancers, the work takes weeks to months. He had it done in days and turnover in less than 24 hours. Possibly one of the best freelancers I've worked with.” —“Steve knocked our project out of the ballpark!” —“Steve is a brilliant, creative writer with a totally professional attitude. Working with him was sheer joy.” And it would be my job to ensure you are equally happy. Contacting me won’t cost you a thing. I would love to hear from you. Reliable — creative ghostwriter — creative writing — video scripts — speech writing — branding — children's literature — rhyming books — memoirs — novels — non-fiction — coaching — structure — humor.

Please read completely as many common questions are answered here. Born and raised in Ohio, I am a native English speaker and have a BA in English from Kent State University. For five years, I taught language, reading, and honors creative writing to junior and senior high students, writing my own drama and creative writing curriculum. Over the course of my career, I have released nearly a dozen YA novels, short story collections, a collection of plays, a cookbook, and a book on writing. I have worked as a freelance writer / ghostwriter in both non-fiction and fiction capacities, writing everything from captions and copy to short stories and novels in myriad genres. While my forte is fiction, I do accept non-fiction work. I've created characters and outlines, as well as writing from a provided outline, and can work with as much or as little as the client wishes. All work is 100% original, meaning that unless otherwise instructed by a client, I do not outsource work to other freelancers and I do not use generative AI programs. None of my writing, including any provided samples, were assisted or created by AI. Much of my work as a ghostwriter has made Amazon's top 100 ebook lists at least once, and I have had more than one make USA Weekend's Bestseller list. I have been freelancing since 2002 and have been writing full-time since December 2012. As I sign NDAs with all of my clients and while some do give permission for me to use parts of that work as writing samples, I cannot provide full chapters of any work I have done for clients. I can only provide chapters from my own work, which is all YA. I do not write samples over 500 words on request without payment. I require all communication to be through a messaging platform, which means no phone or Zoom interviews, though I am happy to set a time for an Upwork message chat interview. My current Upwork hourly rate is $40/hr and my current Upwork per word rate is $0.06/word. This is based on my experience and what my current clients are paying. Outlining, story development, and revision options vary for per word / fixed rate work and are not provided without additional compensation. I work on a first-come, first-serve basis, and that comes by contract, not discussion. I can advise what my schedule looks like at any given time, but until a contract is signed and a project accepted, that may change. I do not accept any work that promotes / portrays any of the following in a positive manner: homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, racism, hatred, or blasphemy of any religion.

Looking for a professional screenwriter to write, rewrite, ghostwrite, edit or analyze a screenplay for you? Find me at This Screenwriter for Hire. For two years I did quite well as a freelance screenwriter/analyst here on Upwork. Then A.I. came along and most of the real screenwriting work dried up, leaving mostly clients paying absurdly low rates below minimum wage, and to compensate Upwork jacked its cut of freelancers' revenue. It's a wasteland now. I haven't done a single job listed on this site in 2026, and I've turned down every "invitation" I've received because they were all jokes. Fortunately, most of my screenwriting work comes from outside sources, not here - clients seek me out. Now Upwork is getting rid of these profiles, further devaluing the platform. The handwriting is on the wall, but I will continue to make myself available to producers, directors and screenwriters seeking a professional's input or participation. Highly experienced professional screenwriter, screenplay doctor, and screenplay consultant/analyst with an extensive background in film production. Member of the Producers Guild of America (for film) and International Thriller Writers (for fiction). Delivers professional, industry-quality work at an affordable rate and is proficient in most genres. I've made 10 independent features of my own - all distributed - and have worked in different capacities on many others; I'm the professionally published author of 12 novels and an instructional filmmaking textbook; a former university screenwriting instructor; and am the director of a successful and long running international film festival. I use Final Draft for screenwriting. I do not use A.I. and I don't clean up screenplays written with A.I. I'm only interested in working on feature-length screenplays or hour-long television pilots; I do not write for YouTube channels, and I no longer bid on jobs, a process that only benefits Upwork. I work with fiction authors who are looking for thoughtful, honest and structured editorial support for their work, through detailed beta reading and manuscript evaluation. My feedback focuses on pacing, plot, character development, emotional impact and reader engagement with my main genres being romance and romantasy. My feedback goes beyond surface level impressions, I evaluate manuscripts at both reader and structural levels. I cover a wide range of analysis areas from genre expectations and fit, to specific areas like world building (for romantasy). My feedback style is thoughtful, honest, constructive and tailored to specific authors needs. I highlight what is working well and where momentum may dip or confusion arises, then provide actionable feedback for potential areas for revision with specific examples. My aim is to strengthen the manuscript and help create something that readers obsess over whilst preserving the authors voice. I work with authors who are looking for more than encouragement, they want clarity, direction and thoughtful insight into their work that doesn't flatten their voice. Authors can be at any stage from starting their self publishing journey, looking for revision on a completed draft or wanting insight from a genre reader. My services vary depending on specific author needs but overall include, beta reading, detailed manuscript evaluation and in depth developmental feedback. I can work on Word and Google Docs using comments and tracked changes. If you are looking for a thoughtful, genre aware feedback to strengthen your manuscript, I'd love to hear from you about your project.
