I can own your infrastructure or fit into the process you have. I build dev and deployment infrastructure from scratch: separate dev/staging/production environments, CI/CD in GitLab, GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps, workloads containerized with Docker and orchestrated in Kubernetes. Infrastructure as code in Terraform, Ansible and Salt, and observability: Prometheus, Grafana, Zabbix, Wazuh. I usually start by auditing what's there - infrastructure, deploy process, what's exposed - and hand back a prioritized list of what to fix first, including security holes teams don't know they have. After a breach: malware removal, IP delisting, tracing how they got in. * HIGH-LOAD SYSTEMS, CLUSTERS AND OPTIMIZATION I build clustered infrastructure that survives losing a node: load balancing (HAProxy, Nginx), database replication and clustering, ProxySQL, Redis, shared storage on Ceph and GlusterFS, Proxmox/KVM and Kubernetes clusters with failover and autoscaling. I put a lot of emphasis on optimizing existing systems. It usually involves code, the database and server parameters at once, so I start with a full audit and profiling to find where the bottleneck is: CPU, disk I/O, memory, network. Slow query logs, EXPLAIN, Percona Toolkit, app profiling, load testing. Then I fix what's limiting the system: query and index optimization, worker and connection tuning, caching (Redis, OPcache, object and page caching), web server and storage config, on WordPress, Magento, Odoo, Drupal, Bitrix and custom stacks. I always send before/after numbers, so you can see what the work did. * HOW I WORK ON PRODUCTION - Nothing starts without a rollback point verified by an actual restore. - Most systems I take over have no documentation at all. I map what runs and write it down as I go. - I don't leave jobs half done. If I take on a migration, it ends with the new server working and the old one safe to switch off. - Retainer clients get emergency response within 1 hour; otherwise same-day. - I don't work with government organizations or projects related to internet censorship, and I don't take on projects that I can't complete fully and guarantee the result for. * MIGRATIONS WITHOUT DOWNTIME, INCLUDING COMPLICATED ONES 2,000+ cPanel accounts and 4,000+ sites moved between servers; a bank's 50+ server infrastructure relocated to another datacenter; 1 TB+ DB clusters; 1,000+ mailbox systems. Old and new run in parallel, the database replicates live, the final delta syncs at cutover, DNS TTL drops in advance, mail queues so nothing bounces. Panel-to-panel moves and end-of-life systems are routine, and so is limited access: with no root I use SFTP or panel backups, remote MySQL and imapsync. Rearchitecting onto Hetzner or OVH cuts 60-90% off a cloud bill. * ACCESS AND CONFIDENTIALITY I work with production systems and client data daily. I ask for the minimum access a task needs, and credentials go through a password manager or your own secrets storage, never plain text in chat. When the work is done I tell you which accounts and keys to revoke, and I remove my own. It’s a problem all too familiar to software developers. Sometimes the job itself doesn’t take anywhere near as long as it does to set up all the tools, libraries, frameworks, and technologies that go into a new development environment. Then there’s the larger problem of keeping work environments consistent and up-to-date across teams of developers, designers, and operators. Inconsistencies across development environments are the number-one cause of the infamous “it works on my machine” bug.

The solution? Vagrant—a tool that specializes in using virtual machines (VM) to set up lightweight, reproducible, and portable development environments. Let’s dive into the details of how Vagrant can boost productivity at your organization.

Reduce project startup times

You’ve probably heard Vagrant’s fanbase talking about how easy it is to “Vagrant up” a new development environment. It turns out the catchphrase is more than just lingo. Setting up a virtual environment in Vagrant really is as simple as typing two lines into your CLI of choice:

$ vagrant init hashicorp/precise64$ vagrant up

These two commands will set up a fully functional VM in VirtualBox running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit. Running “vagrant init” in your own preexisting project directory is all it takes to start up a project. Besides VirtualBox, Vagrant can run on almost any other VM out there, including VMware, Hyper-V, and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Configuration made easy with Vagrantfiles

As you might have guessed before you can “Vagrant up” a new project, a bit of setup is required. Every project starts with a Vagrantfile, which marks the root directory of your project. It’s where you’ll describe the VM and resources (software, installation paths, etc.) needed to run your project. While the file is written in Ruby, knowledge of Ruby is not required, because all you’ll really be doing is declaring variables. Teams will usually commit their Vagrantfile to a version control system such as Git, giving every person working on that project access to the same workstation.

Plug-and-play virtual environments with Vagrant boxes

Once you’ve set up your Vagrantfile, the magic begins. Instead of building a virtual machine from scratch, you can point to a base image called a box that will quickly clone an existing VM. You can download a ready-to-use development environment from HashiCorp’s Vagrant Cloud box catalog and add it to your configuration settings within your Vagrantfile. Or you can go through the trouble of setting up your own virtual environment and route to it directly. The important thing is that once you’ve set up a work environment, you can easily use it across multiple projects and bring new team members up to speed, no matter what operating systems (Mac, Windows, or Linux) their physical workstations are running.

Provisioning with Vagrant

Vagrant ships with out-of-the-box support for VirtualBox, Hyper-V, and Docker. But here are some other popular ways to provision virtual environments with Vagrant:
