What is a sales representative?

Sales reps may generate their leads in various ways, from outside sales representatives visiting potential customers in B2B transactions to inside sales efforts such as e-mail, social media, chat, or phone calls. Sales representatives might also develop leads from other departments in a business or work from contacts lists of potential customers for a service or product. Good sales representatives have strong communication and interpersonal skills, and they use them to excel at the power of persuasion to make the sale. Those skills are also critical in resolving client issues afterward. Internet sales reps market a company’s products or services to generate leads and lure customers to sales portals using SEO to optimize messaging delivered through email, social media, blogs, and more. Other reps cold call people on lists generated by market research to achieve their sales goals.

The job overview

Our life insurance company is seeking dedicated inside sales representatives to assist our sales team on a four-month contract as we endeavor to market a new product. You will market the latest product, develop leads, and close sales by utilizing outreach online and by phone. The work will be performed remotely. Reps will be paid for the number of contacts made plus a sales commission. The sales rep can set their schedule within the scope of reasonable customer contact hours and take as much work as they can handle for the duration of the contract. 

Job responsibilities

Some of the sales representative’s responsibilities include:

  • Meet or surpass goals for outreach, leads, and/or sales
  • Engage prospects via phone, email and messaging to generate sales
  • Follow up with new customers to gauge their satisfaction and build customer relationships
  • Enter all leads and sales, including customer information, into our online CRM sales portal
  • Study details of our new product and familiarize yourself with our target audience to facilitate strong interaction with potential customers
  • Explain the features and benefits of the new product
  • Show authenticity and ability to build relationships with potential customers

Job qualifications 

Some of the sales representative’s qualifications include:

  • Ability to quickly immerse yourself in the details of the new product
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills to engage potential customers, listen, build rapport, assess customer needs, and quickly adjust a pitch to changing dynamics of the interaction
  • Good time management skills
  • At least two years of sales experience and proven track record in using inside sales methods to generate leads and sell products
  • Sales experience in the life insurance industry is highly beneficial but not required
  • Bachelor’s degree in business is beneficial, but experience can be substituted for higher education for reps with high school diplomas
