Looking to finalize on a person in 1 week. Bonus points if you speak fluent Chinese.
I’m an entrepreneur who is looking for a smart, savy, versatile full-stack web dev to make the learning curve quick for me in the web dev languages. Nowadays I work in a start-up and run the operations and business development. BUT I do have a degree in mechanical engineering and experience coding in various languages (Java, some Python, Matlab, low-level assembly, basic HTML/CSS). I see web dev as a safe fallback that allows for remote work, and also helpful to me both in and out of work/entrepreneurship. Technology is a huge part of the future, after all!
I would love to establish a mutually beneficial relationship with a programmer (business <---> technology exchange). Hey, if it works out well, this could be a great, fun, synergistic long-term thing!
This is what you would get out of it:
-Someone in the US (California) that you would be able to ask all sorts of (cultural, work, life) questions to, and potentially connect you with remote work (I’m very open & transparent and good at networking)
-A fun side gig guiding someone who is inquisitive and REALLY enjoys learning and picking up new concepts
-Since I’m an entrepreneur, you’re always free to bounce ideas off me and I’d be happy to give you my business feedback
-Language exchange! Want to improve your English? Awesome, I would love to improve my Cantonese and/or Mandarin. Let’s practice with each other
-I’m...a fun, funny person to know, and I have an interesting background - worked as an engineer, now as an entrepreneur/business woman, traveled to 6 of the 7 continents, hiked up really tall mountains, boxed/kickboxed nationally and internationally
Ideally, I’m looking for someone with:
-5+ years as a full-stack web dev
-Comp sci degree or hacker mentality preferred (I would LOVE to learn the more abstract/conceptual theories that separate an okay programmer from a GREAT, out-of-the-box programmer)
-A strong enthusiasm/love for teaching and mentoring programming
-Available and responsive by Google chat in the usual waking hours of my time zone (PST), or at least the morning (~6-10am PST) and evening (~7pm-12am) hours. This can be somewhat flexible.
-Extra Credit: If you speak fluent Chinese and want to improve your English, I would love to help you with your English if you could help me with my Mandarin/Cantonese. Two birds, one stone. Awesome.
How this works
-Hourly rate: We could probably use an existing app or set up some kind of timer that runs each time we chat.
-We could do every 2 weeks for the first 1 month, then bill monthly from there.
-I have the comp sci fundamentals already. In the beginning you would probably show me how to set up things (environments, APIs, Github), get me in the loop with syntax, point me to the right functions, basic rules of a language. Eventually it would transition to being more of a guide/debugger/sounding board.
Questions (so I can understand your approach)
1) What hours (in PST) can you be available in?
2) What’s your background/how many years experience do you have?
What languages that I mentioned do you know how to use (and what others do you know)?
3) Can you give me a brief example of how you’re an individual who thinks out-of-the-box?
4) Please give me a quick outline of how you would show me to use Slack chat API to write custom commands.
5) How would you use Google Spreadsheets App Scipts to write to a cell other than the one that calls a function?
Thanks so much for taking the time!
