I received my B.S from the SUNY at Potsdam in Computer Science graduating Magna Cum Laude and my Master’s Degree in Computer Science from Georgia Institute of Technology (“Georgia Tech”). I attended for a Ph.D in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (“RPI”). My most recent position was a tutor/teacher at Omega Learning Center and TutorDoctor teaching students from 3rd grade to college students. I also have been a teacher in the New York Mid-Hudson Valley school districts teaching all age groups from 2nd grade to high school students. In college I was a teacher assistant in my undergraduate and graduate studies. During my time in the corporate world I taught training classes. I am a published author for publisher Prentice Hall entitled “Unix Awk and Sed Programmer's Interactive Workbook”. I have taken certification classes in teaching and ESL. I am also a member of the National Tutoring Association, Association for the Coaching and Tutoring profession and American Tutoring Association I teach Math, Science, Business, Economics, Humanities, Social Science, and Computer Science. Math subjects include Calculus, Statistics, Linear Algebra, and Discrete Math. Science includes all sciences. I have taught numerous students ACT/SAT prep and GRE testing. While possessing a good understanding of the subject matter is a given for teaching it goes beyond just knowledge of subject matter. It requires interacting with parent, student and teacher so each feels the experience is positive and productive. Passion to see the transformation of seeing an individual struggle with material and then conquering it. Motivating and making material interesting when the student is unmotivated. Capable of meeting all the challenges and dynamics that teacher and student encounter to encourage them to master the material. In addition, teaching them tips and techniques that can help them progress given whether they are good at memorizing, need visual clues, or learn by example. Be energetic and enthusiastic. It rubs off with the student. With the right balance of energy and enthusiasm the student will be more inclined to feed off it. Clear goals must be established with a time frame associated with it so everyone can determine if the tutoring is working and progress is being met. Quickly identify the student’s learning style and adapt the course material to their learning style overcoming mental blocks that occur in science and math. Communication, communication, communication cannot be stressed enough. Always be positive and non-authoritative during the course of the lessons. Mathematics is often so confusing and so boring, but it doesn't have to be that way! Math is not some mysterious subject that only a few can comprehend. As with any discipline, practice leads to proficiency, and that practice needs to be guided by an expert. No one gains mastery in any subject without guidance. The problem for many people is that they were only told what to do, but never told why to do it. For others, they were never presented with an easy-to-follow step-by-step process for solving problems. Any educational problem can be fixed, no matter how hard it sounds. There is hope. Hope not for hope sake but with a competent, experienced and skilled tutor who has the experience and training to identify all situations that occur during teaching and using trained and proven techniques to see the light at the end of the tunnel Give us a try and you will be happy with the results

What does an Algebra tutor do?

An algebra tutor guides students through the logic of variables, equations, and functions to build a solid foundation in mathematical reasoning. This role moves beyond simple answer checking to diagnose specific gaps in understanding and correct misconceptions in real time. Tutors translate abstract symbols into concrete steps that learners can apply independently during exams or future coursework.

  • Assess the student’s current knowledge level by reviewing recent homework, test results, or specific problem areas they identify as challenging. Use this initial diagnostic to pinpoint exact misconceptions, such as confusion about negative signs or order of operations, before starting new material. Tailor the session plan to address these immediate needs rather than following a generic curriculum that may not match the learner’s pace.
  • Explain core algebra concepts such as linear equations, inequalities, and polynomials using clear, step-by-step demonstrations that highlight the underlying logic. Guide the student through worked examples by asking leading questions that prompt them to determine the next move instead of simply giving the solution. Break complex problems into smaller, manageable parts to reduce anxiety and help the learner see how each step connects to the final answer.
  • Assign targeted practice problems that reinforce the specific skills covered during the instruction phase and require the student to apply what they just learned. Monitor their progress as they work through these exercises to catch errors early and provide immediate feedback on their approach. Adjust the difficulty of subsequent problems based on their performance to keep them challenged without causing frustration or disengagement.
  • Administer brief formative assessments such as exit tickets or quick quizzes at the end of each session to verify retention of the day’s concepts. Analyze the results to identify any lingering errors or patterns of misunderstanding that need further attention in future meetings. Document these outcomes and share notes with the student or parent to track progress over time and adjust long-term learning goals accordingly.

How to hire an Algebra tutor on Upwork

Step 1: Post a job

Define the specific algebra topics and student goals in your job post. Use the Job Post Generator powered by Uma™, Upwork's Mindful AI to draft a clear description from a few sentences about your needs. You can write a new post, update a saved draft, or reuse an existing post.

  • Specify whether the student needs help with linear equations, quadratic functions, or polynomial operations.
  • List required teaching methods such as step-by-step problem solving or formative assessment techniques.
  • State if the tutor must create custom practice problems or use existing worksheets for instruction.

Step 2: Evaluate candidates

Look for portfolios that show experience explaining complex algebra concepts clearly. Uma can run instant video interviews and build shortlists with side-by-side comparisons to help you assess teaching style.

  • Check for samples of lesson plans that break down abstract algebra rules into concrete steps.
  • Review examples of practice problem sets the freelancer has authored for previous students.
  • Verify their ability to administer quizzes and interpret results to adjust future instruction.

Step 3: Interview your top choices

Discuss how the tutor diagnoses learning gaps during a session. Interviews can be scheduled and conducted within Upwork Messages with an immediate transcript and summary after each one.

  • Ask how they explain common misconceptions in solving systems of equations.
  • Request a brief demonstration of how they guide a student through a challenging word problem.
  • Clarify their process for using exit tickets to measure understanding at the end of a lesson.

Step 4: Agree on scope and begin work

Set clear milestones for tutoring sessions and deliverables like custom problem sets. Use Upwork Messages and the contract workroom for communication and project management, plus identity verification, payment protection, hourly tracking, and project funds for security.

  • Define the number of sessions per week and the specific algebra units to cover.
  • Agree on deliverables such as session notes and records of formative assessment outcomes.
  • Confirm the tools the tutor will use for guided exercises and progress checks.

Frequently asked questions

Is hiring an Algebra tutor worth it?

For most businesses, yes: hiring an Algebra tutor is worthwhile. A dedicated instructor diagnoses specific learning gaps and guides students through complex problem-solving steps that self-study often misses. This targeted support helps learners build confidence and master foundational concepts before advancing to higher-level math.

How do I evaluate Algebra tutor candidates?

Look for tutors who explain their teaching process and show how they adapt to individual student needs. Ask candidates to walk you through a sample lesson plan or describe how they use formative assessments like exit tickets to check understanding. Strong candidates share examples of practice problems they created to address common algebra misconceptions.

What should an Algebra tutor include in a session?

An effective session begins with a check-in to identify current struggles and ends with a review of key takeaways. The tutor explains concepts, works through guided examples, and assigns practice problems tailored to the student’s skill level.

How do Algebra tutors track student progress?

Tutors use brief quizzes, exit tickets, and informal checks during lessons to monitor understanding. They record these assessment outcomes to adjust future instruction and target persistent errors.
