How to Become a Screenwriter
Do you love writing scripts? Are you interested in telling stories through developing characters, situations, and relationships for feature films? You may have what it takes to become an independent screenwriter on Upwork.
What does a Screenwriter do?
A screenwriter writes content for visual mediums. Most people think of screenwriters as those who write scripts for both film and television shows, but other visual storytelling mediums, such as video games and education, need content. In Hollywood, “screenwriter” typically refers to the author of a feature film script, while “TV writer” refers to the different job of writing scripts for TV shows.
Successful screenwriters might write original ideas of their own, or they might adapt a novel or comic book into a movie script. Screenplay writers may also edit or rewrite other writers’ ideas or first drafts.
What skills do I need to become a Screenwriter?
A writing career is hard work, and there is no straightforward career path for aspiring screenwriters in the entertainment industry. To work in the film industry, you need to excel at creative writing. Some other important skills include the following:
- Understand screenplay formatting: Screenplays adhere to a very specific format; there are several screenwriting software programs that automatically format screenplays correctly for writers. In addition to physical formatting, traditional screenplays follow a specific act and scene structure.
- Create a good story concept that includes a theme, plot, and structure: You should be able to follow specific story structures and implement feedback as you revise multiple drafts.
- Write a logline, synopsis, outline, and treatment: In addition to the screenplay itself, you’ll need to be able to write a package of materials to help pitch the show to producers and potential investors or collaborators.
- Make connections with filmmaking professionals: Meet people. Networking well can get your script in front of industry professionals, get you a referral to an agent, or a meeting with a producer. If you live in Los Angeles or New York, you can attend film events, like movie screenings with talkbacks. If you live in a smaller market, consider attending film festivals or other events where you can meet professional filmmakers and be inspired.
What are the core Screenwriter job responsibilities?
Screenwriters create the blueprint for a film. They might work solo or with a co-writer, or they might be part of a writers’ room through a studio or production company. A screenwriter takes an idea for a film and really develops the characters, themes, and overall initial vision.
- Develop ideas: Screenwriters develop ideas into detailed stories with main plots and subplots. Whether they’re developing an original idea or someone else’s, they flesh out the story.
- Research: Screenwriters might need to conduct historical research for a period piece or learn about a person’s life for a biopic. They might research slang in a particular region. Writers research whatever information they need to serve the story.
- Outline: Before writing the entire script, screenwriters usually write an outline that serves as a framework for the film. The outline will cover major plot points and break the script down into acts, scenes, and beats.
- Write the script: Once a screenwriter has a complete outline, they’ll write the first draft of a script from start to finish. The script will get a number of revisions, often changing the script even throughout the filming process.
- Pitch the film: A studio might hire a screenwriter to develop a script, in which case they won’t have to pitch the film. In cases when a screenwriter is working independently of a production studio, they pitch their films to producers and studios in order to get funding to make their films.
- Collaborate: Once a film is greenlit for production, writers will collaborate with other filmmaking professionals like producers and directors to create a finished film.
Should I get a Screenwriting degree or certification?
You don’t need a screenwriting degree to have a successful career, though some writers choose to go to film school, or get a degree in screenwriting or creative writing. There are several other ways to study the craft, like reading screenwriting books, taking online screenwriting courses, and joining writers’ groups where you can get feedback on your writing.
Whether you get an advanced degree like an MFA or you learn independently, you need to consistently write and have a collection of your work in a portfolio that you can show industry professionals. You can write spec scripts and submit them to screenwriting competitions. The more time you spend writing screenplays, the sharper your skills will become, and the better your writing samples.
