The following is a review from a recent client, found below under "testimonials": "Cecilia is an excellent proofreader/copy editor. She has worked on several projects for me and has excelled at every assignment. She is versatile in that she is a grammar expert in both English & Spanish and can edit formally or casually if preferred. She is an excellent communicator, understands and follows directions, and has always finished projects on time (if not ahead of schedule). Sometimes I request that she also report back on comprehension of my message and she is really good at that too, oftentimes offering suggestions on how my copy can be more concise or clear. She continues to exceed expectations." Looking forward to hearing from you!

To put it simply: I am good with words. I’ve been on Upwork now for nearly a decade, and in that time, I’ve written and edited for a diverse range of clients and industries, helping to elevate all manner of writing. There is really nothing that I wouldn’t feel comfortable working on. My primary niches are website content and book edits. The former primarily involves deep edits, but I’m no stranger to writing blog posts, either—about any number of topics. That includes blog posts, white papers, website content, and anything in between. Next to that, I’m no stranger to book edits, where I ensure that each word and sentence is as clear, concise, and error-free as possible, and that everything maintains consistency from beginning to end. This includes character development for fiction novels, or the consistency of ideas and concepts in non-fiction. In recent years, I’ve also become familiar with the world of AI and can humanize any manner of AI-generated writing if it so happens that you’re looking to give something you’ve generated with ChatGPT a more human touch. This can include just small writes and edits to help remove the robotic writing style of AI, as well as more comprehensive rewrites to ensure that the writing passes an AI detector. Overall, I have a great attention to detail and a masterful grasp of the English language. I’m able to take even the most awkwardly phrased sentences and make them flow like water. So, if you need another pair of eyes for your writing, I’ve got you covered.

Copyediting is my passion! My expertise includes line editing, copyediting, and proofreading. I focus on reducing wordiness, improving readability, sharpening clarity, and ensuring accuracy—all while preserving the author’s voice. For over sixteen years, I’ve served as the copy editor and final read for numerous authors across genres—including New York Times bestselling author Dianna Love, who writes romance, YA fantasy, and crime thrillers. With Dianna, I handle the copyediting. Others proofread. Then I conduct the final review to ensure the manuscript is fully refined. For all other authors, I provide two thorough reads—copyediting and final proofreading/finalization—ensuring manuscripts are polished and error‑free. In addition to copyediting and proofreading, I’m a strong writer, which makes me a more intuitive, sharper editor. I’ve worked closely with two first-time authors whose stories needed a sentence-by-sentence overhaul to become editorially sound. That’s one end of the spectrum. By the time we wrap up, my clients are ready to publish. I’ve been fortunate to build a strong rapport with each of them, and I believe excellent communication is key. With a sharp eye for detail and unmatched efficiency, I deliver on time. My knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style and AP Style, coupled with my bachelor’s degree from Georgia Tech, ensures quality and professionalism. I offer two pricing options, each including TWO COMPLETE READS: a flat per‑word rate or an hourly rate. My standard rates are $0.04–$0.055 per word and $35–$55 per hour. I'm glad to tailor rates to suit your needs. Most people do better by the hour unless the project is highly labor-intensive. My structure provides the best of both worlds: if my hourly total exceeds the flat-rate quote, I’ll split the difference—so you receive the lowest possible rate. This is my process. In the FIRST READ (line editing and copyediting), I resolve about 95 percent of the issues using Word’s Track Changes. I use comments when I have questions or need clarification. After this pass, I’ll send the file to you so you can accept or reject edits and respond to comments. You don’t need to accept every change—just reject the ones you don’t want and reply to any questions. Once I receive the file back, I’ll accept remaining edits and begin the SECOND (usually FINAL) READ (proofreading) with a fresh copy. After that second pass, your document will be polished and error-free, aside from any final refinements. Completion time for TWO COMPLETE READS depends on word count and how quickly you return the FIRST READ. I strive to deliver promptly while respecting your work. I have copyedited and proofread over nineteen novels by New York Times bestselling author Dianna Love. Here’s a partial list of other titles I’ve edited: • Sun Tzu’s Art of War in the Battlefield of Project Management—NYT Bestseller—Puneet Kuthiala • Qualified, So I Am Justified—Dr. Kevin Tyson • The Leadership Code—Devyani Patel • 70 50 10: The Journey to an Entrepreneurial Legacy—Mike Russell and Visionary Writing • From Profiles to Partners—Edward Jones • Ghost Protocol—C.R. Burnett • Breathe, Eat, Poop & Grow—Brian Heilig • Black Diamond: The Fourth Missing Bullet—B. Frank Hall • Five Indelible Men—S. Z. Mustafa • The Sales Engineer’s Playbook—Darel D. Ison II • Money Laundering and Compliance in Football—Ibrahim ElOraby • Happy Monday: Designing Your Dream Career—Nathan Stuck and Visionary Writing • Original Human Beings—Dr. Tim White • A Café in Paris—Glenn Ritt • The Hypocrisy of the Church—James E. Allen • The Prescription for Overcoming—Dr. Annetta Alexander • Speak, But Not For Me—Enock Menge • The Art and Science of AI in Education—Branson Adams • Can God Use Me?—Kristine Kimmel • Courage for America—Jackie Arnold • Mulberry Creek—Harry Bach • Practice Pathfinder Blueprint * • Lifemap for Teens * • The Best Adventure Ever * (*All three titles by Mathew Jensen) • Ikhla’s Butterfly—S. Z. Mustafa • Farty Friends: A Stinky Story About Friendship—Kiki Stewart • The High School of Low Blows—Rosie Medero • People and Plants—Desiree Delcourt • Castle Vale Publishers Ltd.: Stop Overthinking It, Sky Soldiers, The Great UN Reset • Twenty-five Ruthless Romance novels If you send me a message, I can send you my resume, which includes a book dedication from New York Times bestselling author Dianna Love and heartfelt acknowledgments from other authors Please feel free to send over a few pages—I’d love to show you how I can help. Copyediting is second nature—I help authors shape meaning, one comma at a time.

How much does it cost to hire a grammar specialist?
English grammar freelancers are professional writers or copywriters who specialize in English grammar. These experts in English grammar ensure that written documents are free of grammatical errors. This may involve proofreading academic writings or other materials like LinkedIn social media profiles.
English grammar freelancers may also guide clients on improving their writing skills, offer English language content writing services, or specialize in creative writing editing. Whatever their specific focus, English grammar freelancers play an essential role in ensuring that written English is error-free.
Hourly rates for English grammar freelancers on Upwork range from $15 to $50, but the average cost can be higher for those with years of experience teaching English in the field.
What impacts the cost of hiring an English grammar freelancer?
English grammar can be tricky, and even native English speakers can make mistakes. Fortunately, there are full-time English grammar freelancers who can help you avoid making embarrassing errors within your content marketing pieces and beyond. However, if you want to hire freelancers to write and edit your work, the prices can range based on some of the below factors.
Experience and expertise
If you're looking for someone to proofread a document or edit an important email, you'll want to find an English grammar freelancer with extensive experience with editing jobs and copywriting. More experienced freelancers will likely charge higher hourly rates, but they'll also be able to get the job done more quickly and efficiently.
Depth of editing
Do you need your freelancer to proofread your document simply for grammatical errors or do you need them to provide in-depth editing and feedback on your newest online course? If you only need a light edit, you may be able to find a less experienced freelance editor who can do the job at a lower cost. However, if you need comprehensive editing services, expect to pay more for a freelancer who has more work experience.
Scope of work
To get an accurate quote for your project, be sure to provide your freelance writer with as much detail as possible about what you need. The more information they have, the better they'll be able to assess the scope of work and give you an accurate estimate.
Timeline
The faster you need your document edited, the more it will cost. If you have a tight deadline, communicate this to your content writer so they can give you an accurate estimate.
Geography
English grammar freelancers in the U.S. typically charge higher rates than in other countries. This is because the cost of living is generally higher in the U.S., and English is often their native language.
Popular English grammar costs and examples
Below are some popular examples of English grammar projects and their respective costs. The typical process for editing all of these projects follows the same pattern, but the cost will vary depending on the freelancer's experience, scope, and turnaround time. Some of the more common part-time freelancer gigs include:
- Editing a 2,000-word document for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors: $100-$200.
- Proofreading a 5,000-word article for grammar mistakes: $250-$500.
- Editing a 10,000-word ebook for grammatical errors: $500-$1,000.
- Providing feedback and editing suggestions on a 20,000-word manuscript: $1,000-$2,000.
These prices are just estimates—the actual cost of your project will depend on many of the factors listed above. To get an accurate quote for your project, be sure to provide your freelancer with as much detail as possible about what you need.
Find Talent at the world's work marketplace
From experience and expertise to the scope of work and timeline, finding the right English grammar freelancer for your next project is not impossible. At Upwork, you have access to the world's top talent, so you can get the quality work you need without breaking the bank.
