When it comes to editing, I generally think of authors as supplying the muscle and I, on the flip side, ensure the connective tissue is in place. A book is like a functioning body--everything has to work together to truly come alive! A solid editor is absolutely invaluable to the writing and publishing grind. They identify where a text needs revision and what parts are working harmoniously. Thinking an in-house publishing editor, or online editing tool, is enough to catch any mistakes in a book is a mistake in itself. Hiring an independent editor ensures that the quality of your book will be rock solid before it hits the physical or digital bookshelves of the world. My work over the years has comprised editing: -Novel-length books (fiction & non-fiction) -Essays, poems, novellas, and short stories -Training/ lesson plans for private and government organizations ...as well as doing beta reads for authors and the film industry. Guiding new or experienced writers to truly discover their voice and flesh out their stories is an absolute joy. Everybody has an interesting story to bring to the table--they sometimes just need help to polish and piece it together. My background in writing and editing, plus my experience as a frontline worker, means I bring a unique perspective to the table. Whether you are looking to clean-up stilted dialogue or ensure the accuracy of scientific details or just figure out where to begin, I've got you covered!Poetry

I’m a freelance editor with over 20 years of experience—longer if you count all the typos I used to find in my early reader books. And I NEVER use AI. I love the English language (even if teaching it, or even fully understanding it, is fraught with trouble). My job is to make everything you do better. I have edited for traditionally published authors (like Elise Title who has published dozens of romance novels for Harlequin as well as psychosexual thrillers like Romeo for Bantam), and I have also worked with self-published authors, and even authors who just want to make their passion project perfect for themselves. “What about nonfiction books, Rebecca?” Yep, those too; everything from business manuals like Code–Measure–Improve by Adam Schwartz and Deborah Walsh, to self-help relationship books like Relationship Cleanup by Elise and Dr. Jeffrey Title. A special place in my clichéd heart is reserved for children’s and YA lit. I would call it nostalgia if I didn’t still read them for my own enjoyment. There is room in that aforementioned clichéd heart for my first love—poetry. When I was a child, my big brother read Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss to me until I memorized all my favorites. In sixth grade, when my English teacher read “Suicide’s Note” by Langston Hughes—my trajectory immediately changed. I studied poetry and poetics in college for my final thesis. I think that knowing the way words work in poetry gives me a unique perspective that serves to enhance my editing skills.Poetry

Hello! I'm Mike — My superpowers: Copy and line editing. Proofreading. Writing copy. I pay attention to the small details — I have a knack for spotting the miscue that nobody else spots. I can transform complex ideas into clear, elegant language. See what my clients have to say: "I've hired many proofreaders over the years and he was the BEST!" –Sylvia G. "Mike was an exceptional collaborator on my vocabulary book, with edits that were consistently sharp and thoughtful. He not only caught the tiniest of typos and stylistic errors, but also pointed out where entries needed more nuance and -- as a seasoned writing coach -- consistently pushed for clarity, precision, and strength in every sentence. His work made the finished project truly shine." – Robert L. "Michael is a great editor. He communicated well with me and finished the work quickly. I paid him more than we had agreed on initially because I could see the value he brought to the project. I highly recommend him." – Christine F. "Michael provided excellent help with my project — proofreading and copy editing an academic document. I would certainly work with him again for projects that required proofreading or formatting. He displayed a keen eye for detail." – Ewan K. My background: I bring decades of experience in writing and writing instruction, proofreading, editing, and publishing books, stories, large/small writing projects, speeches, presentations, research arguments, blogs, poems, personal narratives, and essays. (I also support the Oxford comma but will humbly bend to your wishes if you do not!) What I can do: 1) Copy editing and proofreading: I have an eagle eye for spotting any kind of error. These might include grammar infractions, verb tense agreement, punctuation, spelling, typos, regionalization (i.e. British/Canadian stylization), capitalization, homonym errors, sentence structure...you name it. I will spot it so we can fix it. I get a thrill when I find the tiny things that most people miss—that odd extra space, lost period, or missing quotation marks. 2) Line editing: I'll help you rework and rephrase complex ideas into simple, elegant, clear sentences. I have an exceptional ear for tone and voice and can preserve your unique style while sharpening and polishing your prose. Line editing is usually performed ahead of the copy editing. I am able to do line and copy editing simultaneously, but depending on the scope and needs of your writing project, it may take longer. 3) Academic research, proofreading/editing: I have an academic background and am adept at helping academics and researchers with academic journal submissions, proofing copy, formatting citations, and adhering to any unique style guides and submission requirements. 4) Developmental editing: I can do "big picture" collaboration and offer feedback for memoir, nonfiction, academic research, literary fiction, poetry, others within my range of expertise and comfort. Extras: I bring over two decades of experience as a master English teacher in American private and public schools. So, I always bring honesty, dependability, flexibility, teachability, and a desire to jump in and learn new things. If I don't know about a topic, I will research and read until I do. I bring tremendous value as a team person and flexible, creative collaborator who can improvise and pivot on a dime to deliver results ahead of your deadline. I have exceedingly high standards for my clients' end products.Poetry

I've been at this writing game for a long, long time--over 40 years, to be exact. I've won national writing contests, published books with small presses, been the "go-to" editor for fast-turnaround "quick books" at a major publisher, and, of course, helped dozens of individual writers to become better authors. I'm the pickiest of the picky, a crackerjack speller, and The Grammarian About Whom Your Mother Warned You. I also wear a second hat: I've been a performing musician for most of my life--singing, primarily. I have a Bachelor of Music degree, have played the piano since I was 8, and am still involved in musicmaking today. My major was theory, but my first love Is voice, and I am continually fascinated by music history. What a combo, huh? 😁 So...if you want the best TLC your book can get--especially if music is also a part of your life as well--you truly can't do any better. The (Singing) Book Magician is here!Poetry

I am a dynamic creative force — a master copywriter, intuitive and strategic SEO specialist, and self-published author with an unapologetically unconventional voice and unique approach to content writing. I use words to engineer experiences. I've propelled marquee brands like TheHappily Co., Lovehoney, Mananalu Water, Lauren Cecchi New York (LCNY), BetterHelp, and Claire Bahn Group to new heights. I've also ignited growth for multiple startups such as Cornerstone Remodeling, Romantic Blessings, Autoblow AI, Kryton Engineered Metals, Seconn Fabrication, Vietnam Veterans Organization, The Legacy Barn, Coffee Junkiez, and more. When I'm not refining my craft or architecting digital experiences that command attention, I homeschool my two children, cultivate a thriving medicinal garden, and practice acrobats on my backyard trapeze. I am living proof that passion and balance are the ultimate ingredients for success.Poetry

I’m the go-to person when you need someone to keep things running smoothly! With 15 years in customer service, I’ve learned how to handle just about anything—from putting out fires to making sure people walk away happy! I’ve also spent four years as a personal assistant, where I mastered the fine art of juggling schedules, solving problems, and keeping chaos at bay. On top of that, I’ve dived into the world of HR, where I’ve hired great people, supported teams, and made processes that actually make sense. And yes, I have a soft spot for organizing data—it’s like turning a mess into a masterpiece! I’ve got a BA in Sociology/Criminology (so I’m great at reading the room) and an MA in Organizational Leadership (because leading is what I do). Add a little international work experience to the mix, and you’ve got someone who knows how to adapt and get things done no matter the setting. If you need someone who’s detail-oriented, resourceful, and actually fun to work with, let’s chat! I’d love to bring my skills to your project and make your life a little easier.Poetry

I work with both seasoned and first-time authors of memoir, biography, and other nonfiction books in the fields of spirituality, personal development, alternative healing, and other unconventional topics. As an editor and former university instructor, I have decades of experience working with writing at both the macro and micro levels, and adapting my communication style to the individual needs of each writer. I recently edited 15 nonfiction books, including 3 anthologies, for a UK-based publisher specializing in alternative spirituality topics. I will work my magic until your writing soars. DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING As a developmental editor, I work with you to take your current draft to the next level. I will read your manuscript thoroughly and thoughtfully, and provide a comprehensive assessment of the major strengths, the elements that need addressing, and actionable suggestions for revision. This includes feedback on structure and organization, balance of content development, style and readability, and any other areas of focus you request. I will provide a high-level developmental letter detailing this information, relevant comments in the draft itself, and example revisions where appropriate. I also provide video or voice consultations of up to 30 minutes. LINE EDITING I close-read your manuscript, working at the paragraph and sentence levels to address a variety of elements, including (but not limited to) paragraph organization, main idea development, clarity, sentence structure, style, and word choice. Note: While some degree of copy editing typically occurs during this phase, it is a separate step from line editing and ideally should be treated as such. PUBLISHING INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE I am the chief writer for an online publishing startup based in the UK, which has released over 30 titles since 2015. In addition to the majority of the books themselves, I have written the sales descriptions, Amazon A+ content, promotional emails, and ad copy for each release, and have been involved in the process of cover design. We have published over 10 best-selling books on Amazon, with 8 titles acquired by Sterling Publishing, and 2 titles acquired by Hachette France. Our books have sold over 1 million copies since 2015, and have been translated into 5 languages. Our email list currently sits at over 100K subscribers. I also have experience with the traditional publishing industry, having worked with editors from Sterling Publishing on revisions to my books, so I have insights into the production process of your manuscript once it’s accepted. I can also shed light on the pros and cons of self-publishing vs traditional publishing, for authors considering both options. CAREER HIGHLIGHTS *Created 20+ original nonfiction books for UK-based online publishing startup specializing in alternative spirituality topics. I was promoted to business partner after 3 years of commissioned projects. *Over 20,000 ratings and reviews on Amazon, with an average of 4.6 stars and above. 10 titles were later acquired by Sterling Publishing, and 2 were acquired by Hachette France. *My books are translated into French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, and Chinese. *Over 1 million books sold in under 9 years. *Edited 10+ nonfiction books, including 3 anthologies, for UK-based online publishing startup specializing in alternative spirituality topics. *Researched, drafted and edited 300-page authorized biography of Broadway and film actor Pat Hingle from 500 pages of interview transcripts. *Writing consultant for global online higher education tutoring service. Earned commendations for high quality asynchronous tutorials. *Developed and implemented course curriculum for five university courses in English and Creative Writing.Poetry

As a teacher of writing for many years, I have perfected my skills in a variety of genre and topics and am able to fill several writing niches. Here is an overview of the many services I offer: A. Children’s Rhyming Stories While we are on the subject of poetry, one of my skills which I especially enjoy performing is writing children’s stories in rhyming verse. Most of my stories teach a moral lesson or educate. The characters I create are unique and engaging for young audiences. I currently provide stories for a number of children’s publishing companies. B. Poetry I write special occasion and “gift” poems. Just tell me what you want included in your poem and give me a deadline; I’m on it! You wouldn’t believe some of the things people have hired me to write poems about; I once wrote a beautiful tribute to an ink pen. Yes, an ink pen! Just imagine what I can create for you to mark your special occasion or to honor a loved one! You will find my poetry creative and original. I do not tolerate triteness in my verse. One client used the word “phenomenal” to describe my poetry on command skills. See what you think. C. Ghostwriting Do you need help telling your story or writing your memoirs? I can turn your thoughts into an engaging work of art you will be proud of. D. Christian/Faith Based Articles I am a lifelong Christian Believer and student of the Word. I even minored in Bible at a Christian University. I currently write articles for several Christian websites and publications. I write inspirational pieces as well as exegetical. My background as a mother, public school teacher, and Sunday school teacher has given me the necessary skills to write on a child’s level when commissioned to do so, as well. I have a clear and mature understanding of Scripture and always supply “book, chapter, and verse” support for what I write. I may expound, but the Holy Spirit is the Final Word in any matter. E. English Language Arts Educational Materials I am a certified secondary ELA teacher with 30 years of experience. I have taught all diversified learning levels from special education up through senior year Advanced Placement. I write lesson plans, curriculum, assessments, literary reviews, and preparatory materials for national and state exams such as A.P. Language, A.P. Literature, SAT, ACT, etc. F. General Common Interest Articles Some of my work includes articles on current events, informational materials for non-profit and other organizations, op-ed pieces, etc. I am happy to write articles requiring a little research, but I may have to command a higher rate for such pieces, of course, depending upon the depth and scope of research required. Disclaimer: In the interest of transparency, I will tell you that if you are seeking a technical writer, I am not the droid you are looking for. I never learned to program a VCR. If you are young and don’t know what that is, Google it. We have many talented technical writers here at UpWork, however, so you will have no problem finding someone to “satisfy that niche,” if you have it. You don’t want me to write articles about how to manage stock portfolios or instruction in auto mechanics, either. We would both be disappointed with the results. I will not do your homework for you, so don’t bother to forward to me your teacher/professor’s instructions for your latest assignment. On the other hand, I would be happy to take a look at what you have written and serve as an extra pair of eyes to look it over for grammar/usage/mechanics errors and to make stylistic suggestions for revision. G. Editing See paragraph above. H. Book Reviews I’d love to read your work and write a blurb for the cover! If I can’t say anything nice, I won’t take your money. Deal? I hope you have enjoyed reading my profile overview. More importantly, I hope you have discovered that I am the most suitable candidate to fill your freelancing needs. If not, keep searching through the UpWork files. I have no doubt you will find the right person for your job! You may scroll to my general resume information to see where I have worked in the brick and mortar world, where I went to school, yadda yadda. Reviews and Feedback from some of my other clients are also on this page. I invite you to peruse my portfolio to see a small sampling of my work. A keen eye for grammar, order, and clarity, along with a good sense of story, enables me to communicate precisely or correct or improve upon your written work. A native English speaker with a breadth of aptitudes, including writing and poetry, growing up, I majored in engineering at the University of Tennessee and enjoyed a career in computer programming with IBM before taking time away to raise my family. During my ten-year programming career I gained experience in writing user and operations materials, technical papers, and communications. During my children's growing-up years I did a variety of kinds of creative writing just for fun. Between my school and parenting years I won four different creative writing contests and was published in my college literary magazine. After hanging out my shingle with Upwork I began to do a considerable volume of children's writing, technical editing, and adult nonfiction books. In addition, for Upwork clients I've written poetry, blog posts, poetry in advertising jingles, song lyrics, and items of ESL and ELA curricula. In addition, I've provided ongoing editing for non-native English writers. Known for my painstaking attention to detail and persistent pursuit of excellence, I'm as well suited to the production of precise factual information as to the creation of artfully-crafted story and emotion. Areas of particular personal interest include: * Christian life and faith * children's writing - both fiction and nonfiction, rhymed and unrhymed * history * family and parenting * education and learning differences * English as a second language (eight years' teaching experience) * poetry - writing and editing * personal stories/family projects * technical / science / computer (editing and sometimes writing) * curriculum writing and editing - mathematics, computer programming, English * lyrics * business names and slogans, marketing communications * nature, outdoors * amateur photography, photo book making FEE STRUCTURE HOURLY RATE PREFERRED: I greatly appreciate clients who are willing to honor my conscientious work by arranging an hourly rate. The following is a guide for fixed rates, when necessary. * Writing one children's story + one revision + one final edit 100 - 500 words: $125 (To produce a well-crafted story in few words takes much time.) 500 - 1000 words: $200 every additional 500 words - +$75 If we are contracting for multiple stories, some discount may be arranged. * Other writing Ten cents or more per word, depending on the project. Will I need to do research? Do I need to write from someone else's work, organizing and reworking it, etc.?
