Essay: Why Do I Write? Writing is who I am, at least as much as it is what I do. Hemingway called the novel idiom “a movable feast,” and I would echo that for the art of writing itself, all of it, and every sentence of its process, regardless of format, genre, length. As food fuels the human body, words set the soul ablaze. It is a fire I cannot feed fast or full enough. What I love most is the degree of perpetual difficulty involved in the process of developing and honing the craft. At once an adventure of joy and pain, sadness and euphoria, misery and happiness, dusk and dark and dawn alike, the words are the endless quest I value above all others. And because I do, every project I write lives and breathes life all its own. In the end and forever, the tough choices are deceptively simple: It is all about what you value and how much, what you can do and how well, what you can live with and how long. This is the foundation of my work. I refuse to throw empty words at blank pages. My mission is, as it always has been, to discover the truth within the words, then hold on tight. In the balance of the bargain, I've written plenty, and I'll write until it's over. All told, as Malcolm Gladwell’s classic *Outliers* confirms, a writer needs to develop for ten thousand hours to clear the threshold of mastery. It follows, while I have logged the specified time behind honest keys, because I believe in my work, the final word on its quality is for you. What I would like you to know about my work is the character of my commitment: I devote an ethic of quality to the craft that I rarely see. As such, when I’m in the work, I take pride in writing beyond the standard. As Super Bowl Champion Mike Tomlin, head coach of my Steelers suggests, “The standard is the standard.” To this, shoving prodigy Paul Skenes of my Pirates adds, “The standard never sleeps.” —The Standard is The Standard and The Standard Never Rests.— For the words themselves, the standard is, as it should be: The pursuit of greatness. At the peak of the precipice, every letter lives and dies by the standard. And ever thus does the writer. The journey there is where we truly live, in that state of hurtling evolution, the confluence of love, passion, dreams — the place where the end is the beginning and beginnings never end. That's where you'll find me. Please be mindful of your time and mine, but you're free to reach out to me with project details anytime. I'll be happy to chat with you. My consultation fee is $50/half hour. See you in the pages, —MDA, Pittsburgh, 8.2.24— The Eight Pillars I prize more than any others: Love, Passion, Dreams, Memories, Gifts, Worthiness, Legacy, Selfless Immortality. As a child I was aware of very little early on, and then everything in an instant. My favorite memories are my childhood summers, whiling away carefree days cloudbusting and hunting for golf balls — prizing any color besides plain white — in the not-quite-thousand-acre wood behind my parents' modest suburban home. More than anything else outside of pure love, I spent my childhood nights watching classic movies, as many as possible, and as many times as my parents and siblings would allow. Forrest Gump is #1 all-time for me. —Life is about what you want and how much. The rest is what you can live with. © MDA, 2025. All rights reserved.
