Helping authors and publishers craft swoon‑worthy romances, intricately woven mysteries, and historically rich narratives—with precision and heart. I love partnering with authors who are ready to elevate their stories from good to unforgettable. With over a decade of editing experience, I specialize in spotting plot holes, inconsistencies, and narrative gaps that often slip past other eyes, ensuring your manuscript is both compelling and cohesive. As a native US English speaker with extensive experience in editing and proofreading, my goal is to ensure your ideas shine through with clarity and impact. I specialize in refining flow, enhancing readability, and tailoring each project to your unique voice, timeline, and creative vision. I’m fluent in both US and British English conventions, allowing me to tailor your manuscript to the appropriate audience with precision and consistency. Whether you need detailed feedback or discreet technical fixes, I offer flexible support to meet your needs. My passion lies in fiction, and I’ve worked across a wide range of genres—including Romance, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Mysteries, Legal Thrillers, and more. I bring a sharp eye for detail and a deep respect for historical accuracy, especially in Regency‑era stories and Scottish Highlander novels. I hold a BA in English Language and Literature with a minor in Creative Writing, and I am a proud member of the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA), upholding industry‑recognized standards of quality and professionalism. My lifelong love of reading naturally evolved into a career in writing and editing. Typos and awkward phrasing make me wince—so let me help you polish your manuscript until it gleams.

I believe that your voice, your message, and your unique way of being are important. My goal is to help you create a story that is "in alignment with you as a human being—and not just some cringe-worthy, tokenized [AI content] that only vaguely resembles you." (quote by Andrea Guevara) As a developmental editor, ghostwriter, and line editor, I have worked with clients from China, India, Uganda, Zanzibar, Trinidad, Morocco, El Salvador, Korea, Hawaii, and more. I help clients tell stories about adoption, immigration, mental health, infant loss, spiritual and sexual abuse, drug recovery, and much more. I write books for business and leadership clients ranging from entrepreneurs to top educational leadership, from public speaking coaches to business people worth $100 million. I provide ghostwriting, developmental editing, and line editing services. The key to creating an authentic book is "doing the hard work of... exploring your values, your worth, your vision for what you uniquely contribute to the world. There are no shortcuts. Okay, maybe there are, but the results (and consequences) are NOT the same." If you are looking for someone to dedicate the personal time and attention necessary to capture your unique message, please reach out! Alicia Snyder is a freelancer ghostwriter, editor, and developmental editor living in Wichita, Kansas. Brief Overview: You know those teachers who catch every little mistake in student papers, and offer extensive and substantial comments on how to improve the work? Students might not be fans of this…but wouldn't that be exactly who you want in your corner, to help you perfect your work before submission/publication? That’s me! I am a professional academic with decades of experience writing, editing, peer-reviewing, and formatting academic and non-fiction content, with a lifelong passion for fiction. My editing experience includes co-editing The Heritage of Western Greece book series, assisting numerous (often ESL) peers publish in academic journals such as Physiologia & Archai, as well as assisting independent authors improve the philosophical content of their books. The Full Details: About Me: I’m a native English speaker with a Ph.D. in Philosophy, an M.A. in Classics, a B.A. in History. I have 17 years’ experience as a professional academic: professor, editor, reviewer, and published author. I have provided editing, copy editing, proofreading, and ESL assistance, for hundreds of academic and professional documents — including research papers, manuscripts, dissertations, journal articles, and technical reports. How I can help you: Developmental Editing ("The Big Picture"): You have a great idea, but are having difficulty developing it into a cohesive thesis/story, with good flow, logical consistency, and no plot holes. *I will provide a systematic review that identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the core elements and themes, with actionable advice on how to proceed towards completion. Line Editing ("Content & Style"): You have the big ideas and a rough draft, but need assistance with improving the writing in order to clearly and effectively communicate the information to the reader. *I will provide an in-depth and detailed line-by-line analysis, to help you effectively deliver your thesis/story to your audience. Copyediting ("The Technical Details"): Your manuscript is essentially complete, but it could use some help with grammar, syntax, clarity, and consistency. Perhaps it also needs to be properly cited according to a style guide. *I will help ensure your manuscript is consistent and technically correct, to ensure a professional-level polish. Proofreading ("The Final Check"): Your manuscript is basically finished. But it needs a final check, to ensure it is entirely error-free, prior to being submitted/published. *I will provide a careful systematic check, to ensure the copy is truly error free, so you can be confident your readers will not find any unprofessional and embarrassing mistakes. Style Guide Compliance: Your manuscript needs to ensure proper credit is given to your sources, according to a particular style guide. *I will provide complete and accurate compliance with whatever style guide is needed for your manuscript. I am proficient working with multiple common citation styles (APA Style, MLA Style, Chicago Manual of Style), and can also follow alternative style guides for particular publishers. Fact-Checking/Research Support: You need to make sure that no sources were lacking in or inappropriately attributed, and/or you need to ensure your claims are supported by your sources. *I will thoroughly check the information in your manuscript, and ensure consistency and accuracy with your cited sources. ESL Assistance: You want to publish in English, but it is not your native-language, and you could use the assistance of a native-speaker. *I have extensive experience helping non-native English writers achieve native -level clarity and fluency, without losing their style, and successfully publishing. Editing and writing have been my profession for more than four decades, through newspapers, university public relations and in retirement as a freelancer. I am expert level, highly skilled in all three major types of editing: proofreading, line editing, and developmental. My fee structure is based on type: • Proofreading, the most basic: correcting typos, misspellings, grammar, punctuation and, when a particular style is required (including citations, endnotes, footnotes or reference lists), style errors. My rate: $100 per 10,000 words. • Line editing, the most intensive: proofreading plus sentence level editing, line by line, to correct or improve syntax; word choice; paragraphing; ambiguity; repetition in wording or content; consistency in headings; stale verbs; passive voice; dull sentences; broken metaphors; or any of a thousand other small weaknesses that kill writing and bore readers. It is polishing the writing to improve clarity, flow and voice and can include some of the organizational elements of developmental editing. My rate: $200 per 10,000 words, $250 if generated by AI or if AI was the primary editor before coming to me. • Developmental editing: may include proofreading or line editing but is primarily a consultant role to help develop and organize the material to achieve the best possible structure, presentation, and pacing. Fee determined based on size of the project and in discussion with the author. I am open to working for an hourly rate or a fixed price but my Upwork posted rate of $50 per hour is a rigid minimum. For proofreading, it covers up to 5,000 words. After that, it goes up by $10 for every thousand words, rounded up after 500. For line editing, the $50 minimum covers up to 2,000 words; $100 for 5,000; $150 for 7,500. Rounding up kicks in at 750 words above the break points. I may request a representative sample before accepting a job. Fees include one round of revision in proofreading or line editing. Substantial additions in the revision process may require adjustment to fees. Pricing for revisions and additions in developmental editing are determined during the initial consultation. A summary of my professional abilities and attitudes: • Create live, active sentences from sludge, improving readability, flow and clarity. • Highly skilled in the mechanics of writing—spelling, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, syntax, and more. • Am not a grammar cop: Grammar exists to serve writing. Clarity and readability sometimes require variations on general rules. • Zealous in pursuing smooth flow from sentence to sentence to paragraph to chapter to conclusion. • Attentive to consistency in organization, appearance and presentation style. • Can preserve, create or remove authorial voice as needed. • Knowledgeable and experienced in various styles: CMOS, APA, AP, and CWMS, conversant in others and can adapt to any. • Expert in editing AI to eliminate redundancy and repetition and give a human feel, sound and flow to algorithmic language. • Conduct discussions on and critiques of writing in a frank, honest and professional manner. • Enjoy working and interacting with writers and can readily conform my enjoyment to almost any personality type. • Intangibles: possess an intuitive sense that warns of potential error across a broad range of possibilities; bring the entire toolkit to every job; desire always and in all things to learn. All the above applies to my writing. My goal as a writer is to make the subject as lively as the material and context allow. My expertise is a result of education, training, and the breadth of my experience but equally important is more than 65 years of reading for work and pleasure and the multitude of writers I have worked with. I am ready to discuss the possibilities of working with you.
