1. Translation: English to Korean, Korean to English, French to Korean, French to English I grew up speaking both English and Korean. I was born and raised in Seoul and later moved to San Diego where I am currently based. At Yale, as a french major, I had the opportunity to study at Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris. I also spent two summers there, working at Galerie Maeght and Atelier Isabelle Menu. Thanks to my background, I can understand and distinguish the nuances in three different languages, rooted in three distinct cultures. Since joining Upwork, I have worked on a wide range of projects including MTPE, emails, letters, presentations, websites as well as legal and medical documents. I have also interpreted webinars and court hearings. I provide translations that are not just accurate but relevant. Language is dynamic and adaptive: New words are created. Some change meanings over time or die out. This pattern reflects broad social changes, including shifting norms. I strive to take these observations into account when I translate or interpret for my clients. In short, I can guarantee high quality work, based on intimate knowledge of the culture and 5+ years of industry experience. 2. Editing As an editor, I support projects in various stages—from shaping ideas to proofreading the final draft. I specialize in essays for college and grad school applications, cover letters, research papers, and presentations. Writing is never easy. Telling stories to strangers makes us feel vulnerable. Besides, we are never sure if we used the right word or the right tone. I can offer clear suggestions, so the writer can benefit from constructive feedback. As for style, I prioritize highlighting each writer’s unique voice to ensure a compelling read. About Me: I graduated from Yale with a BA in French and History of Art in 2016. At Yale, I received the 2015 Scott Prize for the best French essay. (The paper analyzed the cinematography in the 2013 film "Blue Is the Warmest Color.") I helped found the Yale Photography Society where I co-organized the annual student exhibit and taught Korean at the Center for Language Study as a peer language tutor. My early experience is built around short-term projects: I translated curatorial texts at Galerie Maeght in Paris and edited a book by the residents at MeetFactory, a contemporary art center in Prague. Shortly after moving to LA, I interned at Matthew Marks and the American Cinematheque. At the latter, I had a unique experience live interpreting French intertitles in "L’Horloge magique" (1928), Starevich's surreal puppet animation film. Thanks to Gwen Deglise, then head programmer of the Cinematheque, who recommended me to Outfest, I screened short and feature submissions at the nonprofit for four years. Most recently, in 2022, I worked as a language consultant for an episode of the AppleTV show "Little America." I translated parts of the original script into Korean and assisted dialect coach, script supervisor, and 1st AD on set.Proofreading

Over the course of my 20+ years as a professional writer, editor, proofreader, and designer, I've helped dozens of clients in numerous industries by writing and editing articles, blogs, books, web pages, social media posts, white papers, press releases, video/audio scripts, training manuals, and other projects. About half of my career has been in managing editor roles for two trade magazines, a community newspaper, and a quarterly medical journal (which I still do). One of my favorite types of work is book editing, and I've edited over three-dozen books so far. As the author of one book myself, I know how much work it is, and I love helping make authors' work shine! Because I work for such a variety of industries -- including healthcare, insurance, business (B2B and B2C), non-profits, science, politics, social justice, animal advocacy, pet care, religion, technology, and many other fields -- I'm always learning new things, which I love. In addition to being a fast learner, I'm a team player with management experience. I specialize in editing documents and manuscripts in English so that they are cohesive and polished with a focus on spelling, punctuation, grammar, word flow, and the effective use of words. In addition, I format paperback books and ebooks for self-publishing on Amazon and other platforms. "Editing is a tricky business. It requires analytical flair and creative panache, the patience of a saint, and the vision of a writer." - The University of Chicago Press. "In editing, as in many endeavors, rules are made to be broken; but to break them well, we must first learn to master them." - Scott Norton, University of California Press I have a passion for the English language and my aim is to always assist a client in achieving an appropriate and excellent way in which words and phrases are used. One client received this comment on the work I did for him: "Kudos to your editor - this is really cleaned up and the language pops!" Another client wrote: "Joan is awesome. Here's what I wish they'd taught me in college: writing doesn't matter if no one will read it. At least not from a business standpoint. It's like that old line about a tree falling in a forest: if you create a document but your target audience ignores it because it's not tailored to their needs, does it make a sound? People are busy! They aren't going to waste their time reading something that isn't relevant, that's too long or wordy, that strikes the wrong tone. From website copy to technical documentation to fiction, this principle stands firm: writing doesn't matter if no one will read it. That's where I come in. My job is to consider your audience, and then take your message, content or idea and craft it into something suited to that audience's needs. In addition to writing new text or editing existing text, I can do document design, formatting and layout, and even create figures and diagrams where needed—all in service of making sure your message gets to its intended audience. You may ask how I back up that claim. My answer: more than ten years' experience writing and editing professionally, a college degree in the field, and a lifetime of being everyone's go-to when they need their English essay proofread. For more concrete evidence, check out my portfolio below. But the best way to find out what I can do for you is to ask: reach out to me here on Upwork. I'd love to talk to you.Proofreading

I work as a television news multimedia journalist. I do my own videography, write my own stories, edit my own video, and present my stories live on air. I have won several awards for my work in both television and radio. I am fluent in Spanish, and studied the language in Seville, Spain. I am a dedicated worker, a quick learner, a good listener, and a skilled writer. I also have experience advertising; I would write short advertisements and catch phrases for my employer’s clients.Proofreading
