Reliable Quality Transcription at Reasonable Rates

    Philippines - Last active: 3 days ago - Tests: 5 - Portfolio: 4

I love what I do, and I am good at it. Fluent in written and spoken English, I transcribe with a passion for quality and learning. Excellent customer service is a top priority. I take pride in having strong communication skills, a good work ethic, and a strong desire to produce the best possible outcome for every project I work on. I am enjoying my golden season, a second blossoming, so to speak: a time to draw from the lessons learned and the wisdom of the years; a time to turn to the creativity and the gifts I have often overlooked; and a time to stand back, think, and to gratefully appreciate everything I have been blessed with. I take pleasure in a life of simplicity with emphasis on faith, family, and friendships. Working from home is the most ideal lifestyle for me because I love being able to fit my work around my schedule; and, most importantly, I am home most of the time for the special needs of a loved one Transcribing and editing is a matter of personal style, and I recognize that variations in style will always exist. But there are some important guidelines to employ to produce a clean read. I don't just transcribe and type the words. I care about the finished product; therefore, I do my best to make the document as readable and accurate as possible. A good quality transcript begins with a good quality recording. It gives me great pleasure to be able to produce a good quality transcript. I make every effort to hear and understand what is said so as to eliminate as many indiscernible words as possible; but there will be times when I will not be able to do so especially with difficult audio which means background noise, speakers talking over each other, and muffled recordings. To avoid creative transcription or "guessing," those words and phrases will be clearly marked, highlighted, and time stamped for easy editing. If the project calls for a verbatim transcription, every word spoken including the speech disfluencies will be captured. Nonverbal communication such as pauses, laughter, sighing, crying will also be identified. If the project calls for a clean transcript, speech disfluencies such as stutters, verbal ticks, repetitive phrasing, false starts, minimal responses, etc. will be edited out. While minor grammatical edits will be done, I will remain as close to the spoken material as possible. Since the spoken word is more dynamic and immediate, it tends to be less precise. It may contain non-fluency features due to it being spontaneous. When people are speaking, they sometimes start and stop a lot of their sentences while they are trying to think of the best way to say something. Unless verbatim, only incomplete sentences that may add meaning to the transcription in some way will be included. Ellipsis points will be used to indicate interrupted speech, false starts and when a sentence trails off or when a speaker changes thought in mid-sentence; and dashes will be used for added emphasis or to stress a point. Good transcriptionists are able to adapt to different clients' preferences. So should you have any other specifications, please let me know.

expert troubleshooter, generalist developer, tenacious problem solver

    United States - Last active: 9 days ago - Tests: 2 - Portfolio: 1

"Jack of all trades, master of none" is typically said in a derogatory fashion, but I adopt the title gladly, and you will not likely find more than a few dozen generalists worldwide who can match my troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. I've been programming, on and off, for 40 years, if you count my study of BASIC in 1968, 6 years before I actually got my hands on a computer: the DECSystem-10 at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. As a result of working on computers and microcontrollers of various sizes and capabilities over the years, I have learned to get to the basics of a problem, come up with a prototype solution, and refine it to the customer's satisfaction. My methodology, which I found later is used by many successful programmers, is "build one to throw away"... once the code is working, rewrite it from scratch, correcting the false assumptions made in the first attempt, and refactoring to make a clean, maintainable, codebase. My background in both the electrical/electronics side of things plus years of experience reverse-engineering and improving software on dozens of different architectures gives me the rounded background necessary to take on projects which leave specialists lost. I may charge more than most ($100 is my usual rate, but I found it's unrealistic on Odesk), but when you've run up against a brick wall, I can likely find a way over, around, or through it.
