Dear Sir / Madam. Having dedicated my career to the disciplines and studies of Advanced Project Management, I reached the pinnacle of my ongoing studies in 2009, when I was awarded Professional Status with Project Management South Africa. This was a major milestone as Professional Status is only awarded by PMISA to those who have submitted tangible proof of an outstanding portfolio of studies, projects and achievements. In addition, in 2012 I successfully completed the Rhodes University course and examinations for the NQF 9 Project Management Standard which is at master’s level. Prior to the foregoing, and subsequent to my schooling and two years military training, I did an apprenticeship as a Structural Draughtsman with Dorbyl South Africa, moved on to Architectural Design and Drawings, was chosen as a Housing Quality Judge by the NHBRC, studied for and completed the examinations for the Real Estates Board, obtained the NQF 5 Civil Engineering certification in construction, studied for a Damelin Diploma in Project Management and completed advanced certification in Construction Contracts and General Conditions of Contract specialization with the University of Pretoria. Additional courses and Diplomas are included in my supporting documentation. My achievements with Project Management in the Construction and Development fields have included the compilation of numerous building designs and plans, the construction of a multitude of buildings including low, middle and high-end housing, schools, clinics and industrial structures, the design and setup of maintenance schedules and the carrying out of maintenance projects on a large variety of Projects. The civil Engineering Projects have included dams, roads, pipelines, earthworks, concrete work, housing and commercial developments. My experience on managing these diverse projects has been gained whilst working in my private capacity over the years and work done with and for various private companies and Governmental bodies. The restoration of the Heald Town College complex in the mountains outside the town of Fort Beaufort, was an extremely challenging project, as the brief was to reinstate the complex to the same condition and stature as when it was originally constructed in the 1880’s. There was extremely high attention on the project, as it was Nelson Mandela’s Alma Mater. Further detail is given in my Curriculum Vitae. As a variation from my well-loved construction and development fields, but remaining in the Project Management realm, I accepted the challenge to set up and direct a hugely difficult and demanding project in Mauritius where my skills, knowledge, tenacity and diplomacy were severely tested when I ventured into the tourism and hospitality fields. The project consisted of a sea-plane aircraft sight-seeing business in Mauritius. The business, which continues to this day, is now owned by Mauritian persons, as we returned to South Africa in 2003 after eight years in Mauritius. The challenging project involves the hosting of guests from all corners of the globe who are on holiday in Mauritius and wish to partake in airborne safaris and sight-seeing flights. The Project is also challenging as it is popular with VVIP and 5-star guests from hotels who are most particular in their expectations and demands. The Project set-up stage was at the highest levels and included liaison with the then Prime Minister and the applicable Governmental Ministers. I performed the duties of Director and Chief Pilot for the Company and in addition, managed the safety and all maintenance aspects. In 2020, I was appointed by the Fibre Internet Company, Frogfoot/Vox, to take over the fibre infrastructure contract in East London, where the project had fallen into a poor state of affairs and was constantly halted by the authorities for damage to their infrastructure. I successfully turned the project around to be a success for all parties. The company then asked me to undertake the servicing of a second town. All the infrastructure work is now complete. The diversity of my work, and the varied nature of projects, have ensured that my ability covers a wide spectrum of work in different situations, diverse places and a with a myriad of personalities. I am proudly known as an “expert and specialist organizer”. I am a team player that has learnt to become a knowledgeable and skilled leader and mentor through experience, learning and a positive, friendly attitude. During my work in the Eastern Cape province, I was proud to be bestowed with a Clan Name of “Qwathi” which in the isiXhosa language means “he who does what is right and good for people”. This is a very rare honor, seldom given. My family lineage on my late Father’s side is Scottish, and my late Mother’s lineage is German. I am a native English speaker, originally from the UK, but now based in South Africa. I have spent over 40 years of my working life in global IT/Business Management and Management Consultancy. My most recent experience is in Interim and contract-based positions in companies that need temporary executive-level assistance, either because of a turn-around requirement, to provide gap cover while recruitment is underway, or to manage a specific project. Since 2003 it has mainly been in senior positions in Tertiary education. I am now semi-retired. My most recent assignment was with SABEN/TENET, a supplier of ICT Internet connectivity to the South African tertiary education sector. My role was as project manager visiting all 53 TVET colleges in South Africa to establish the state of ICT provision in each TVET; My report was presented to the Minister of Education in early December 2019. Further assignments were cancelled because of travel restrictions following the Covid pandemic. I am now semi-retired. Prior to that, I was an ICT Consultant and part-time ICT lecturer at Woldia University in northern Ethiopia. My main project was the $ 25 million design and installation of a new state-of-the-art multi-campus network, including hardware, software and ancillary services such as a solar power installation. The current ICT department was also to be completely restructured. I had full management and budget responsibility, reporting directly to the head of the University. The project team was 5 University employees and around 30 sub-contractors. Unfortunately, the project will need to be restarted from scratch following the destruction of the University's ICT infrastructure in the 2021/2 civil war. I have also filled senior ICT roles at Pretoria University and been ICT Director at two universities in the Easter Cape province in South Africa. I have been writing regular articles on business and IT technical topics to be published on various blogs for Upwork clients each month for several years, supplemented by one-off assignments as they arise. Unfortunately, because of Non-Disclosure Agreements and other confidentiality considerations, the only samples I can provide are generic.
