My job was such a simple task, I figured anyone with basic skills could complete so didn't spend time interviewing and just gave to the first person who applied. I figured everyone deserves a chance. This backfired. Freelancer worked hard and spend a long time on task but made little progress. Instead of working smart, he worked hard. If I had endless time to complete task, this would not have been a problem but I had a strict deadline. After an extension they were only 25% through. I ended contract, paid freelancer in full and will do myself.
The task was to take 4 pages of newspaper with 6 columns in pdf form and move to excel and separate the data into 6 columns. Each page had roughly 120 records. A simple copy and past would have moved everything into excel where the data would need to be copy/paste or manipulated in whatever way was suitable to get each entry into corresponding columns.
