We hired John to help create school curricula, along with another consultant, as a sample to a startup product we wanted to showcase. As an educator he was knowledgeable. We talked about the number of hours and lessons that could be developed per week. Since we had more specific requirements the process was a little more complicated and slower understandably. Still, John put in about 1/2 of the hours weekly he agreed upon and his hours fluctuated a lot per week.
In addition, he did not regularly update the project document so we could not easily track progress without looking into the details of his work. Mainly though, about 1/3 of the lessons were developed during the target date when we went live. However, we still needed all of the lessons still. Shortly after he asked for an increase in hourly rate and to cut hours. In general, John is a nice person. But when he sent a new contract and ultimatum without any discussions or suggestions to change his hours and rate and before the initial project phase or milestone was done. I felt it was both unethical and bad timing. Had he delivered on the initial timeline or number of lessons, then for phase 2, we would have been happy to increase his rate. In my 15 years working with freelancers this is the first time someone has acted like this and during the middle of a project. Moving forward we cannot work with John because we have no trust that he will finish a project, on time, and/ or without changing terms in the middle of a project. As you can probably see from my other comments and feedback, it is rare for me to have a bad experience with a consultant on this or other platforms.
