Project details

Most executive ghostwriting fails for the same reason: the writer never gets close
enough to the person. You get competent corporate prose that could have been written
for anyone, the executive quietly rewrites it themselves, and everyone agrees not to
do that again.

I fix that with a voice guide before I write anything. One interview, then a documented
reference - the phrases they lean on, the words they'd never use, how they open, how
they close, what they do when they're uncomfortable. After month one, drafts come back
needing edits instead of rewrites.

I've ghostwritten for CDIOs, VPs, and CEOs, including a monthly CEO town hall series
and annual company kickoffs, and designed the decks that went with them. I've written
the easy announcements and the ones where a leader had to stand up and say something
people didn't want to hear.

Every engagement starts with a voice calibration session. If your executive can give me
45 minutes once, everything after that gets faster and sounds more like them.

About Cara

Cara J.Status: Offline
Internal Comms Strategist | Exec Ghostwriter | Change & AI Rollouts
Plano, United States - 10:35 pm local time
I fix broken employee communications. In 8 months I replaced a Fortune 500 intranet nobody had touched in 8 years — 800+ pages, solo, 90% adoption in 60 days. I built the newsletter 100,000 Verizon employees actually read. I build, I fix, I measure.

I've spent my career inside enterprise internal comms teams at Verizon, Frontier Communications, and Capital One, and I've been running independent client engagements since 2023. Verizon has been my client throughout — work that included owning cybersecurity awareness communications and publishing to the only Slack channel that reaches all 100,000 employees.

WHAT I DO FOR CLIENTS

→ Change & transformation communications. I've communicated through four CEO changes, a bankruptcy, a $1.35B asset sale affecting 960 employees, union actions, and COVID-19. If your people need to hear something hard, I know how to say it.

→ Executive communications & ghostwriting. Town hall scripts, all-hands decks, CEO memos, leader talking points, thought leadership. I've written in the voice of CDIOs, VPs, and CEOs, taking messaging from "A message from our leader" to "Forward-worthy info from an approachable thought leader."

→ AI rollout communications. I use AI daily in my own practice, and I write the internal messaging that helps employees understand what a new AI tool means for their job — the part most rollouts skip, and the reason most of them stall.

**If you're rolling out AI, message me and I'll send you my AI Adoption Comms Playbook — a 90-day blueprint for why adoption starts before the first memo and continues long after launch. It's yours whether you hire me or not.

→ Newsletters, intranets & channel strategy. Three internal newsletters launched that beat industry benchmarks, two intranets rebuilt, and channel audits that cut noise instead of adding to it.

→ Benefits & HR communications. Open enrollment, policy changes, accommodations, and the messages employees actually have to act on. During COVID I built a benefits and protocols hub used by 5,000+ employees and ran the confidential inbox that fielded 800+ of their questions. If you need someone who has experience dealing with sensitive information, I know where the hidden pitfalls are and what to do about them.

→ Content marketing & long-form writing. Feature stories, bylined articles, case studies, employee spotlights. Published in Ragan Communications, with dozens of bylined features in Verizon's public newsroom.

RESULTS I'M ACCOUNTABLE FOR

- Weekly newsletter for 100,000 employees, sustained 60%+ read rates
- 30% lift in internal news readership on mobile after an editorial rebuild
- Employee spotlight series that tripled its Slack channel membership in 3 months
- Killed an $800K vendor contract by proving existing tools could do the job —then hit 92% adoption and a 40% engagement increase in the first 90 days
- Patent program campaign: 90% more submissions, 40% more patents granted

HOW I WORK

Straight answers, no jargon, no 40-page strategy deck you'll never open. I ask what you're trying to change, then build the smallest necessary thing that changes it. I'm comfortable being the only communicator in the room — and handing the work off to your team when the engagement ends. Nobody gets left holding something they don't know how to run

Fully remote, US Central. Happy to start with a small paid pilot before you commit to anything bigger.

ABOUT ME

I started out doing standup, badly. It turned out to be the most useful training I've had for this work - nothing teaches you faster whether a message is landing than watching a room decide not to laugh. (When I'm not writing, I live in an unofficial Lego museum, working through a backlog of unbuilt sets at a perfectly acceptable pace.)

Tell me what's not landing. I'll tell you why — and what I'd do about it.
