Most people treat a name like a task. Get it done, move on. That's usually fine until it isn't. Names become load-bearing faster than anyone expects. They end up on contracts, products, job postings, legal filings. By the time you know it's wrong, changing it is expensive.
Naming looks like a creative problem. Pick something that sounds good. Maybe a bit clever. But that's not what makes a name work. What makes a name work is whether it's defensible. Whether it can own a position. Whether it rules the right things in and the right things out. That's a strategic problem, not an aesthetic one.
I've worked at Ogilvy and FutureBrand and inside British American Tobacco. The useful thing about that mix isn't the variety. It's that you see the same decisions get made in very different contexts and start to notice which ones hold and which ones don't.

I start by getting a clear picture of what's actually going on. What the business is trying to do, where it sits, and how the market behaves. Most problems look different once you see them clearly.

Then I work out where the brand should stand. Who it's for, what it should be known for, and crucially, what it isn't. Making a real choice here is what separates brands that stick from ones that drift.
