I build the failure cases first. What happens when a field comes in empty, when the API times out at 2am, when the same record arrives twice. Unglamorous, and the only reason an automation is still running six months later.
Before building anything I map what you actually do now. What starts the process, who touches it, where it stalls. Often a step turns out to be unnecessary rather than automatable, and deleting it is cheaper than automating it. I'll say so even though it means billing you less.
