Numbers from a B2B services site I run in a narrow professional niche. It went from not appearing in Perplexity at all on its main commercial query to first cited position, within an hour of one deploy. In Google it holds a Featured Snippet and the top AI Overview citation on that query.
What decided it was phrasing, and I tested that instead of assuming. Same page, same niche, two versions of the buyer question. The version carrying the exact words buyers actually type took position one and the AI Overview citation. The other did not rank at all. Nothing else differed between them. So I build pages around the question rather than around the volume number, which matters most in small B2B niches where keyword tools return almost nothing useful.
Two things I check on any site before touching content. Whether Google is reading a current sitemap: on mine it was serving a stale one and had indexed 64 of 92 URLs, and resubmitting the full URL took it to 92. And whether the domain is in Bing's index at all, because ChatGPT reads Bing, and a technically clean site can sit there at zero indexed pages and stay invisible no matter how good the writing is.
How I measure: a fixed set of real buyer questions, checked per engine on a schedule. Are we cited, who is cited instead, and what does their page have that ours does not. You see movement rather than a report describing effort.
The other half of what I do is AI automation, and it is why I can build the tooling around this instead of checking everything by hand.
Two of my systems are running in production right now. A Prague salon was leaving Google reviews unanswered because nobody had time and the two owners read different languages. My agent watches the mailbox, drafts a reply in whatever language the customer wrote in, and sends it to the owner's phone. One tap publishes it. Nothing goes out without that tap. The second is a sales assistant on Telegram: four languages, voice notes transcribed, and when someone asks for a human the conversation hands over cleanly instead of dying.
Before those: a custom GPT for SEO metadata with an eligibility gate and a QC checklist built in, which the client stress-tested for three days and left five stars. A product knowledge base of about 220 items across seven categories, with versioning and role-based access. A 64-page business website in four languages, built and shipped solo.
Day to day: Claude and OpenAI APIs, Python, n8n, Make, Zapier, Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
