GDD for Kids Game
Quoted $10K for a Unity WebGL game with 2 game types and 10 levels. Delivered a React web app with 10 game components and 100 levels, which is over-delivery on game count. The game logic (scoring, rounds, accuracy) was correctly implemented.
However: quoted Unity game engine rates but delivered a standard React web app with DOM rendering and CSS transitions. Tried to charge $3K-6K extra for features already in the original spec. Delivered placeholder analytics showing fake metrics on zero-gameplay accounts. Database threw Firestore timeout errors while milestones were claimed complete. Called basic QA "micromanaging" and threatened to leave when sent a testing checklist. Project took 13 weeks on a 3-4 week timeline.
After delivery, I had to triple the codebase (21K to 61K lines), adding 137 new files and rewriting most of the original 60 to add GPU-accelerated game rendering, proper audio, security, accessibility, and visual polish. 80% of the shipped product is my own work. What was delivered was a prototype that could have been scaffolded in 2-3 days with modern AI coding tools. The game logic was solid. Everything else was MVP scaffolding passed off as a finished product.

This step involves the actual design and development of the personalized game. It includes tasks such as creating avatars, writing customized storylines, designing levels and implementing gameplay mechanics.
