Project details
Designed and implemented a production-grade PostgreSQL 17 High Availability and Disaster Recovery solution for a multi-cloud IoT sensor data platform, spanning Azure (database tier) and AWS (application/routing tier). Built automatic failover using Patroni and etcd for distributed leader election, with HAProxy routing traffic to the current primary via health checks — achieving a ~15 second failover window with zero data loss. Complemented this with a full backup and archival pipeline using pgBackRest, continuously shipping WAL files to AWS S3 for point-in-time recovery, with scheduled full and differential backups. Configured an S3 lifecycle policy to automatically tier backups to Glacier and Deep Archive, cutting long-term storage costs while retaining full disaster-recovery capability. Validated the entire system through controlled failover simulations, PITR restores, and full-VM disaster recovery drills. Delivered complete operational runbooks covering health checks, monitoring, troubleshooting, and recovery procedures for ongoing maintenance by the client's team.
