Varun was also flexible with regard to troubleshooting other developers code when we didn't know what the exact issue was up front.

Varun's Python skills were good for the work he delivered. He worked on our private Python packages and had to implement several bug fixes and features.
However, I struggled to integrate Varun into the team with reliable communication and delivery of work he promised. We worked in an agile development setup with kanban boards and two fixed weekly meetings. Varun attended the in-person meetings but didn't maintain and communicate the tasks, boards, and status updates. We agreed on reasonable due dates, which were shifted numerous times. That made it incredibly hard to plan the projects and distribute the work to the team.
After two conversations to improve on the mentioned behavior with a mutual agreement, Varun agreed to work on deliverables while I was out of the office for two weeks. All resources and contact to colleagues for questions were provided for the work discussed. After my return, I found out that Varun hadn't been working for three consecutive weeks without any notice to the team or me, which ultimately forced me to end the engagement.
I did my best to make it work, but the freelancer hasn't improved his communication and delivery schedules. Unfortunately, I can not recommend Varun for ongoing, long-term engagements.
