bay area cbt center website migration from wordpress to vercel
I initially had no intention of leaving negative feedback because I wanted to give this freelancer the benefit of the doubt regarding her health issues. However, after she abruptly ended the contract and left feedback that I believe may misrepresent what happened, I feel I need to document my experience.
She started off communicating well and being consistently available. Around the second week, that changed. Over the following two weeks, she mentioned an ear infection twice, canceled three appointments because of headaches or migraines, and became increasingly difficult to reach.
The scope of the project did not materially change. We moved from Vercel to Netlify, but I had been clear from the beginning that we needed to decide on a CMS/visual editor. I made the move myself, asked if she was comfortable continuing with Netlify, and she said yes.
There was also a misunderstanding about SEO. She offered to help with it, and I was happy to pay her hourly for it, but she was never intended to be primarily responsible for the SEO. I was hiring an SEO professional separately. This was later framed as me changing the scope, which was not the case.
Communication eventually broke down to the point that I paid approximately $500 for development work that was done incorrectly, with no proper handoff to my WordPress developer. I was left without usable work or a clear understanding of what I had paid for.
There was also unnecessary confusion about whether she would be paid for Zoom meetings. We had a separate hourly contract, and of course I expected to pay her for her time. These misunderstandings could have been resolved through the Zoom communication we had originally established.
I had no issue with her needing to end the contract. Had she simply said she was not feeling well or could no longer continue, I would not have left negative feedback. What I am not okay with is three canceled appointments due to migraines, two mentions of an ear infection, increasing unavailability, and then having the situation reframed as though I changed the project or caused the contract to end. I genuinely feel gaslit by how this was handled.
It is unfortunate because I did not want to leave a bad review. I would have preferred an honest acknowledgment that she could no longer continue rather than having the circumstances turned around and attributed to me.
