Plugin Implementation and User Instruction Creation
Laju is not a technical idiot—but he is quite frustrating to work with. He’s capable of building things that function, but communication, accountability, and attention to detail were constant issues. I had to re-explain myself multiple times—even after giving clear written instructions, screenshots, and live examples. Tasks were misunderstood, half-done, or done incorrectly and had to be micromanaged step by step.
The goal of this contract was to: rebuild a WordPress plugin that matched the look and feel of the existing site, with better performance and cleaner code. Not a redesign. Not new functionality. I referenced the live site constantly and explained everything clearly. Despite that, basic layout and styling problems—spacing, logos, font sizing, image order—kept showing up again and again, even after I had already flagged them.
There were several moments where I was told something wasn’t possible or would require a full redesign—usually followed by explanations about Elementor constraints, dynamic content, or needing “more and more hours” to make layout changes. At one point, I even acknowledged that WordPress might not be the perfect platform for this—but the goal never changed. I wasn’t asking for complex new features; I just wanted it to look and behave like the existing, working site. After enough pressure, many of the things he said couldn’t be done were done. That kind of resistance wasn’t just frustrating—it eroded trust and dragged the project out unnecessarily.
The mobile layout was especially frustrating. I asked several times—early and clearly—for a specific structure: mood image at the top, followed by text, then the property gallery. This is how the current site functioned. He initially said it couldn’t be done with the new plugin he built, then said it would cost more, which I paid $100 extra. Then he implemented it incorrectly—multiple times. Eventually, he did fix it, which only made the earlier excuses more frustrating.
A recurring issue involved a “NEXT | PREV” navigation between category posts. On desktop, it worked fine. But on iPhones, it didn’t work at all. I sent screenshots and screen recordings, and still got responses like “works on my device.” Rather than trying to reproduce the problem, he asked me to keep testing it myself. It took weeks to resolve something that could’ve been fixed early with proper QA.
His English is okay, but not fluent, and it showed. I often had to rephrase the same thing multiple ways before it landed. He wasn’t rude—but he wasn’t proactive either. Instead of asking questions or verifying expectations, he waited for me to notice things and call them out.
I ended up playing QA, designer, and PM—not because I wanted to, but because I had to. Tasks marked as “done” weren’t. Items I’d already reviewed came back broken. Obvious things were missed—like image quality or layout consistency—and I couldn’t rely on him to catch those on his own. The client noticed too. They pointed out the same flaws I’d already flagged, and I had to explain and apologize for them. It made me look careless when I’d actually been over-communicating from the start.
This wasn’t a case of scope creep or unclear goals. The expectations were well-defined, the examples were right there, and the deliverables were reasonable. The problems came from lack of follow-through, poor attention to detail, and repeated resistance to feedback. I wasn’t asking for miracles—I just wanted things to be done properly and consistently.
One of the most successful parts of the project was the backend structure he built to dynamically generate the property pages. It replaced a much slower setup and noticeably improved load times across the board. That solution was smart, efficient, and technically solid. It showed that when he’s focused and clear on the task, he can deliver thoughtful, performance-oriented results. I wish that same level of clarity and execution had been consistent throughout the rest of the project.
To his credit, Laju stuck with the project. He stayed responsive and helped get things across the finish line. The final product works—but getting there took far longer, cost more, and involved way more stress than it should have.
I know this review may hurt Laju’s rating—and likely his ability to get jobs on this platform in the near future. That’s not something I take lightly. But if you’re planning to spend thousands of dollars and trust someone with your client’s expectations—as I did—you deserve the truth. I’m not writing this to be cruel. I’m writing it to be honest. I truly hope this serves as a learning opportunity for him to take ownership, stop pushing back on clear direction, and understand the value of getting things right the first time. We got the job done, but it came at a cost I wouldn’t be willing to pay again.
