Workshop 1: IPA Magic – Perfecting Pronunciation
The IPA (International Phonemic Alphabet) is used as a vehicle and teaching tool for exploring various interactive ESL activities. Various teaching-learning styles are addressed through the four/five macro skills. New instructional technologies/software are introduced through hands-on, adaptable activities. Heavy focus is placed on using the Web 2.0 (Blended Learning & Flipped Classroom approaches) and ICT teaching-learning. Plus many, many practical and creative ideas offered to teachers, which they can adapt to suit their teacher-learner educational needs.

The course is primarily aimed at both novice and experienced ESL teachers alike, who wish to hone their teaching skills, network and share ideas with colleagues, and to discover new, innovative, and creative teaching approaches.

In addition to this, this course is suitable for more advanced ESL students who wish to fine-tune their English skills to improve their IELTS band score, or to achieve similar academic goals, through interactive (and fun) approaches etc.

About Diana Joyce

Diana Joyce R.Status: Offline
English Grammar Specialist, Teacher Trainer, Proofreader & Copy-Editor
Da Lat, Vietnam - 5:02 am local time
Hello! My name is Diana Renke and I am a native English speaker, originally from Cape Town, South Africa, but have been living and working in Vietnam since April 2016. With over 14 years of teaching experience, I am a career teacher and absolutely love what I do! In addition to checking grammar, I’d be more than happy to explain which specific grammar or language rules apply, in order to help you to recognize these rules, to ultimately help you to become more autonomous and independent in the future.

I like to make my lessons as student-centred, creative, interesting, relevant and fun as possible. I specialise in designing and teaching lessons to suit a student's specific requirements and interests, whereby taking on a whole-student approach, and like using a variety of teaching and learning approaches, not the same boring ‘chalk ‘n talk’ methods. Teaching and learning should be celebrated and revered, and not seen as some arduous chore.

I taught Art to children of all ages (6-18 years old) for five years and have over eight years of ESL (English as a Second Language) teaching experience with people of all ages and nationalities. I have experience teaching exam courses, including IELTS, Cambridge YLE (Starters, Movers & Flyers), CAE, KET, PET, FCE. I am truly passionate about the teaching/learning experience and enjoy working with people of all ages and walks of life.

I am in possession of a Cambridge University (U.K.) accredited CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults), Certificate V, and a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Diploma, Certificate IV. In addition to this, I have also obtained a TAE (Certificate IV in Training and Assessment). This qualification allows me to legally train teachers, which is my passion and this is what I had been doing part-time for more than three years, in collaboration with Hello English Language Center in Dalat, Vietnam and its Australian RTO, LTI. Furthermore, I also have a BEd (Bachelors in Education) degree and a post-graduate BEd Hons (Bachelors in Education Honours) degree, both obtained from Cape Peninsula University of Technology (South Africa).

The above-mentioned credentials are important, but not necessarily a true reflection of the teacher I strive to be. I have testimonials from previous employers, colleagues, ESL students and teacher trainees I have taught over the years available, on request, as is a collection of photos of my past students and I.

In my free time, I enjoy a variety of interests, particularly the Arts (drawing, painting, reading, writing, photography, theatre and music). I love the outdoors, gardening, hiking, cycling, camping and abseiling. I am also a foodie and love cooking (and eating!) and would be lost without my morning cappuccino.

I speak three languages fluently, namely English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa. I also speak very basic French, Vietnamese, German, Portuguese, Arabic, Czech, and Chinese. As an avid traveller, and eternal student, I love learning about other people's cultures, customs and languages. Travelling to interesting, off-the-beaten track places has both educated me and shaped into the person I am today. In addition to this, I am fascinated with geo-politics and feel very strongly about the advocacy of environmental, animal and human rights.
