I always do 2 passes. The first is a word-by-word, line-by-line analysis, making edits using track changes in Word or Google Docs, or using my trusted red pen if the work is submitted in PDF or some other format. The second pass is through writing-checking software to ensure I haven’t missed a comma or typo. I’m anal like that.
The most common issues I come across when proofreading and editing are wordiness and word choice. Why say a sentence in 10 words when you can say it in 7? Wordy texts just make reading more arduous. It’s a real put-off.
Also, as an experienced writer, I instinctively look at ways to vary sentence structures, add quirkiness and flair to writing, choose better words and, at the same time, simplify where necessary, and kick off and conclude chapters or sections in a gripping way to keep the reader hooked.
My feedback will be thorough, sincere, and direct, with no sugarcoating. There is nothing worse than an editor saying positive things about a piece of writing that just isn't good enough. How else can writers learn from their mistakes?
