    Computer modeling used to be thought of as nerds waiting on line to run their punch cards through the mainframe. Since then, computer modeling has evolved into a vast and exciting field. Models, when used correctly, can be a critical tool in making management decisions. This is where I step in. I earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree with a major in Financial Mathematics and a minor in Computer Science in 2014. The combination of the coursework provided solid footing to hit the ground running straight out of college. Over the past four years I’ve been building and working with computer models in a Life Insurance setting. Due to the current low interest rate environment, much of my time has been spent modeling and analyzing what the state of the company may look like in a prolonged low interest rate environment, and measuring the various levers management can pull to maintain their desired financials. Other cases of modeling and judiciously analyzing include: · Projecting mortality trends and using the results to set annuity benefits · Measuring the duration (sensitivity of value to changes in interest rates) of assets and liabilities · Running stochastic analyses to measure tail risk · Routine model enhancements Of course, no modeling exercise is complete without a succinct presentation. Typically, I use PowerPoint to graphically display results in an easy to understand format. Computer modeling is a very powerful tool when used and understood appropriately and can be an asset to any business.
