We have all been there before. We had accidentally deleted our manuscript(s) off our computer for whatever reason. We do have the PDF Proof copy from the printer. However, the export to Word function cannot begin to process your printer's proof copy into something you can edit.
There is only the nuclear option.
Believe me, I know because I have looked and looked and tried several different techniques. The only thing that worked is to copy and paste the words, one page at a time, from the proof copy to a Notepad document. It will strip out all the extra coding that might sneak in when you copy and paste. Then, convert that over to a Word document. Finally, you can add back all the formatting for your manuscript that you usually use.
This takes time, patience and intense attention to detail because not all of it will work as you would wish it to the first time around. You have to validate your work to ensure everything that was in the proof gets moved over properly to the new document.
