Kick Off and Get Access
Confirm project scope + time period to clean (ex: last 6 months). Get accountant access to QuickBooks Online (or Desktop file). Collect starting docs (bank/credit card statements, prior tax return, payroll, etc.).
Initial File Review
Check chart of accounts (look for duplicates, messy structure). Review prior reconciliations — are they up to date or skipped? Scan for uncategorized expenses and accounts like “Ask My Accountant.” Note open invoices/bills that may not match reality.
