Project details

Gain an advantage with this interactive Zoom session! Many writers I've worked with have wonderful stories--they just aren't picture book stories. This session will give you the foundation you need to begin writing a picture book story or revising an existing story with confidence.

We will spend 2 1/2 hours together on Zoom exploring the children's picture book, including:

• The aspects that make a picture book and its story unique among children’s books.
• How your text and the illustrations work together.
• How a picture book story differs from a magazine short story.
• Types of picture books and story approaches
• How your text and the illustrations work together.
• When and if to rhyme a story
• Words and language: How they support a picture book story

You will receive a number of downloadable handouts to refer to before, during and after our session.

About Denise

Denise V.Status: Offline
Writing Coach for Children's Book Writers
Englewood, United States - 12:39 pm local time
I'm an award-winning published author who has been in the world of children's literature as a writer and a coach/instructor for 20+ years. I am on faculty to teach and guide children's writers at Lighthouse Writers Workshop, Regis University's MFA in Creative Writing, and the University College at the University of Denver.

I support and guide children's book writers, whether they are writing a picture book or a young adult novel. Together we can level up your stories through improving your craft, understanding the interplay between your text and the illustrator's pictures where appropriate, work toward submitting for publication (if that's a goal) and more. Depending on where you are in your journey, some of these steps (like working towards publication) will come much later in the process.

• I’m a published author who understands the ins and outs of story
• I keep up with the industry and children's publishing ebbs and flows
• I’ve worked with dozens of happy writers
