A carbon footprint is a measure of the impacts of an activity on global warming by calculating the greenhouse gas emissions of these activities, usually stated as a ‘CO2e’, or carbon dioxide equivalent. This is done to show all key greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide) expressed as a common unit, allowing easy comparison across organizations, industries and countries.
Scope 1 – All Direct Emissions
From the activities of an organization or under their control. This includes fuel combustion on site, from owned vehicles and fugitive emissions.
Examples include fleet vehicles, gas emissions from boilers and air-conditioning refrigerant leaks.
Scope 2 – Indirect Emissions
From electricity purchased and used by the organisation. Emissions will be created during the production of the energy and eventually used by the organisation. Includes electricity from energy suppliers to power computers, heating and cooling.
Scope 3 – All Other Indirect Emissions
It refers to all indirect emissions that occur in the value chain of the reporting company, including both upstream and downstream emissions.
