Tax Advisor/Accountant needed to understand taxes in Japan
Professional, quick, clear communication, and flexible! I'd certainly work with Yohei again.
About Yohei
U.S. CPA (WA) | Japan Market Entry & Tax | Cross-Border Finance
Shibuya, Japan - 12:37 pm local time
I help foreign-owned companies and investors operate safely in Japan by combining:
- Japan market entry advisory
- Japan-side tax and accounting insight
- Cross-border finance, credit, and risk analysis
Before launching my own company, I spent 15+ years in Japanese finance, including:
- A major Japanese bank (investment banking / corporate finance)
- JCB, Japan’s largest credit card brand, as a corporate credit manager (risk assessment and portfolio management)
- Founder & CEO of a Japanese corporation (including tax filings, subsidies, and crowdfunding in Japan)
Because I have sat on both sides – as a lender and as an entrepreneur – I focus on what is practical, not just what is theoretically “correct”.
--------------------------------------------------
What I actually do for clients
--------------------------------------------------
1) Japan market entry & setup (for foreign companies)
- High-level roadmap for entering Japan (subsidiary vs. branch vs. distributor)
- Identifying likely regulatory and licensing areas you need to be aware of, and flagging where specialist legal/tax advice is required
- Helping you structure how to work with local tax/accounting firms and regulators (what to prepare, what to ask, what to expect)
- English-language memos explaining “how Japan works” for non-Japanese stakeholders
2) Japan-side tax & accounting advisory (non-filing, advisory only)
- Explaining Japanese corporate tax, consumption tax (incl. the invoice system), and local taxes in plain English
- Reviewing your current or planned structure for Japan-related tax risks from a practical, business-focused perspective
- Clarifying what your local accountant is saying (English summaries of Japanese documents / notices)
- Simple checklists for ongoing compliance (what must be done monthly / yearly so there are no surprises)
I am not trying to replace your local accountant. My role is to make sure you (and your non-Japanese stakeholders) actually understand what is going on and what the risks are.
3) Cross-border finance, credit & fundraising perspective
- Financial and business risk analysis for Japan-related projects
- Credit / underwriting style review based on my background in corporate credit at JCB
- Support for fundraising in Japan (equity, debt, or crowdfunding) from a finance and risk perspective – structure, investor story, and numbers
(I do not act as a broker-dealer or placement agent.)
- Support for internal investment memos or board materials (in English), so decision-makers can read one clear document instead of dozens of emails
--------------------------------------------------
How I work (important to know)
--------------------------------------------------
To avoid misunderstandings and keep a clear record:
- I work 100% remotely and asynchronously (written communication only).
I do not join Zoom / phone calls. Everything is done via Upwork messages and written documents.
- Before starting, I clarify in writing:
- Scope of work
- Deliverables (for example: a 3–5 page memo, checklist, comments on your documents)
- Timeline and fee (hourly or fixed price)
- During the project, all advice is provided in writing so that you can share it internally and refer back to it later.
If you write me a short description of your situation (even in rough form), I will tell you honestly in my first reply whether I think I can actually help, and if so, how.
This style tends to work well for:
- Clients in different time zones
- Teams who prefer written analysis and documentation
- Topics where “what was said” must be clear for compliance reasons
--------------------------------------------------
What I do NOT do
--------------------------------------------------
To set expectations clearly:
- I do not act as your legal representative or sign / file tax returns on your behalf.
- I do not provide legal opinions as an attorney or certified tax agent in Japan.
- I do not participate in any activity that violates Upwork’s Terms of Service,
including taking external tests on your behalf or working outside the platform.
--------------------------------------------------
If this sounds like a fit
--------------------------------------------------
If you are a non-Japanese company or investor planning to:
- Enter the Japanese market
- Hire staff or contractors in Japan
- Work with Japanese customers, distributors, or partners
- Understand the tax and financial implications of your Japan operations
feel free to contact me with a brief description of your situation.
From there, I will suggest a concrete scope, deliverables, and fee, and we can decide together whether it makes sense to proceed.
As a personal note, I’m also a long-time fan of Japanese manga and anime, so projects connected to Japanese pop culture are always welcome.
