Children's Book Illustrator for Book Series (Budget-Friendly)
This was one of the worst freelance experiences I’ve ever had, and I would strongly caution anyone considering hiring this freelancer for any project. DO NOT hire him if you want your project completed in a timely manner and to your specifications!
What should have taken a few weeks turned into ONE YEAR of delays, excuses, broken promises, ignored messages, incomplete work, and constant stress. I hired this freelancer to illustrate and format a children’s book series and funded the project in escrow through Upwork in good faith. Unfortunately, after payment was released in full while I was sick in bed and unable to properly review everything, the level of communication, urgency, and professionalism completely changed.
Before payment, responses were quick, reassuring, and professional. After payment, I spent month after month chasing updates and hearing the same promises repeatedly:
* “I’ll send it tomorrow”
* “I’m working on it”
* “I’ll send samples shortly”
Then days, weeks, and sometimes over a month would pass with nothing delivered.
I repeatedly asked for simple sample pages with the correct text and illustrations together so I could confirm the direction before the full book was completed. Those requests were ignored over and over again. Instead of following my manuscript, he used incorrect text, added his own wording instead of mine, included typos, duplicated pages, mismatched illustrations to the story, left out content entirely, and failed to properly implement revision requests that had already been clearly explained multiple times.
I had to repeatedly point out obvious mistakes that should never have happened in the first place. Characters were left out of illustrations, important details from the story were ignored, scenes didn’t match the text, and even after correcting the same issues multiple times, the problems kept happening over and over again. At one point, I realized he had essentially rewritten parts of my book instead of using the manuscript I provided. He had the attitude of I'll do what I want when I want to do it.
The most frustrating part was that he simply did not seem to care about me, my project, my deadlines, or the impact this was having on my business. I explained MULTIPLE TIMES that I had opportunities to sell this book in bulk and needed it completed by certain dates. He never acknowledged the urgency, never met either deadline, and never delivered a completed publication-ready book.
Because of this, I lost business opportunities and lost the $300 I paid him because I ultimately had to hire someone else to finish the project properly.
What made the experience even worse was the complete lack of accountability. I repeatedly explained that it was unfair that he had been paid in full while I had nothing usable in return. I warned him several times that I would leave an honest negative review based on my experience, but he did not seem concerned at all and made no meaningful effort to correct the situation in a timely or professional manner. I even asked for a refund because I felt I deserved it after waiting a year for something that was supposed to have been delivered in 2 weeks, for all the stress and hassles he put me through and for not delivering the project as I wanted and asked for. I gave him a date when I wanted the refund or I would provide a negative review but it didn't matter to him. He never even answered me.
I also repeatedly explained that I wanted to build an entire book series and needed someone reliable long-term. Instead, I spent almost a year dealing with delays, excuses, incomplete work, ignored messages, and constant stress trying to get one single book completed.
While some of the illustrations showed potential, the overall project management, communication, delivery process, attention to detail, and ability to follow instructions were extremely disappointing.
This experience caused an enormous amount of unnecessary stress, frustration, wasted time, missed opportunities, and financial loss.
I absolutely cannot recommend this freelancer for projects requiring:
* reliability
* communication
* professionalism
* attention to detail
* project management
* timely delivery
* following instructions
* accountability

Illustrations needed for a children's book
I hired Aqib to help create illustrations for our (my son and my) very first children's book. Needless to say, Aqib provided an exceptional service and product! He brought our book to life in such a creative way. If I had to do it all over again, I would go straight to this talented artist for this work and save a lot of time.
