Fintech and AI products look like different categories, but they share the same core UX problem: the user is being asked to trust a system they can't fully see.

In fintech, that system handles their money, and a single confusing fee, ambiguous balance, or surprise charge breaks trust permanently. In AI, the system makes decisions on their behalf, and a model that sounds confident while wrong does the same thing.

Both categories punish bad design more harshly than almost anything else. They also reward good design more, because trust, once earned, is hard for competitors to copy.

ON THE FINTECH SIDE

Trading platforms (equities, options, futures, crypto). Neobanks and challenger banks. Payment products and digital wallets. Lending and credit flows, personal loans, BNPL, mortgages, business lending. KYC and KYB onboarding. Portfolio dashboards for retail and pro traders. Treasury and business banking. Wealth management and roboadvisors. Insurance UX. Tax and accounting platforms. Expense management. Cards and rewards. Cross-border payments and remittances.

The work is about making complexity unambiguous: amounts, fees, outcomes, timelines. Users should never have to guess what just happened to their money. A surprise $4 fee will lose you more customers than any onboarding tweak gains.

Compliance shapes the UX, not the other way around. Familiar with KYC/AML, PCI DSS, SOC 2, GDPR and CCPA, regional rules like PSD2 and Open Banking, and how SEC/FINRA rules constrain what trading apps can show.

𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗜 𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗘

• Conversational AI and chat interfaces.
• AI agents and copilots embedded in existing products.
• ML-powered analytics and BI tools.
• Generative AI tools for content, image, code, and design.
• AI-powered search and retrieval.
• RAG-based products.
• Voice AI.
• Agent orchestration tools.

The work here is about making the system's reasoning visible, what data did it use, how confident is it, when should it say "I don't know," and how do we surface citations without breaking flow. Most AI products skip these questions. The good ones don't.

𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗜 𝗨𝗫 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀: streaming response UX, error and refusal UX, citation and source display, model selection, prompt UX, conversation history, multi-modal inputs and outputs, agent action approval flows, undo and rollback for AI-generated changes, and the trust signals that determine whether a user delegates real work to an agent.

𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗧𝗪𝗢 𝗠𝗘𝗘𝗧

• AI in fintech, increasingly.
• AI trading copilots.
• Automated underwriting UX.
• AI portfolio managers and roboadvisors.
• Fraud detection interfaces.
• AML alert investigation tools.
• Customer service AI for banks.

These products combine both trust problems and need designers who've worked on each.

𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗙𝗢𝗖𝗨𝗦 𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗦

𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗨𝗫: balance and transaction displays unambiguous about amount, currency, status (pending, settled, reversed), and direction. Fee transparency designed to build trust. Time-zone-aware timestamps. Limit and approval flows.

𝗞𝗬𝗖 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: identity verification that doesn't lose users at step 3. Document upload UX. Selfie verification. Risk-tier-based progressive KYC. Beneficial ownership for KYB.

𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗫: order entry, order book displays, position management, P&L visualization, options chain UX, charting integration, and the difference between UX for retail and pro traders.

𝗔𝗜 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗨𝗫: turn-taking, streaming, regenerate, citation footnotes, tool calling visualization, and the difference between chat-as-the-product and chat-as-a-feature.

𝗔𝗜 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆: when to show confidence scores, how to design "I don't know" responses, how to handle hallucinations, and the workflow when humans need to verify.

𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: chart types matching the underlying data, tables with 100+ columns made navigable, real-time updates, and dashboards that scale from one user to enterprise.

𝗧𝗢𝗢𝗟𝗦

• Figma
• ProtoPie for chart, data, and AI streaming UX.
• Origami for complex AI interaction states.
• Familiar with TradingView charting library, AG Grid for data-heavy tables, and the design constraints of LLM
• APIs (latency, streaming, partial responses, errors).
• Fintech startups from seed through Series C.
• Neobanks.
• Trading platforms.
• Lending companies modernizing their UX.
• Payment processors.
• Wealthtech products.
• AI startups building user-facing products.
• Companies adding AI to existing fintech products.
