It wasn't a hard question. Someone had built his database in week two of the project without asking what the product would be doing in year two. Every table was wrong in a small way. Three weeks was optimistic.

Why this happens to smart people

Nobody hands you a document that says choose now: cheap and finished, or expensive and extendable. You get two quotes, one is $8k and one is $40k, both say "MVP development," and nobody explains the gap. So you pick the sensible number. Anyone would.
