Laravel / Nova / PHP Back End Developer to complete the upgrade from 5.8 to 11
Afaq worked on upgrading our Laravel backend from version 5.9 to 11. While he was responsive and available throughout the project, there were several significant issues that impacted the overall outcome.
Challenges encountered:
- Accepted the project without thoroughly reviewing the existing codebase, which led to complications later
- Suggested changing from Nova to Filament admin interface mid-project (claiming better familiarity) even if he knew it would take many more hours. He guaranteed not to exceed budget, which he kept his promise and didn't charge after he filled the budget and kept working on the project.
- Only completed approximately 70% of the work after 7-9 months, leaving the project unfinished
- Delivered tasks that frequently contained bugs due to insufficient testing
- Showed limited problem-solving abilities and lack of curiosity about the business logic behind application features
Positive aspects:
- Always available and responsive to communication
- Follows specific directions when provided clearly
- Demonstrates basic Laravel knowledge
Recommendation:
Afaq may be suitable for smaller, well-defined tasks under close supervision, but I would not recommend him for complex, independent projects. Future clients should ensure thorough project scoping upfront and maintain regular oversight throughout development.
The project remains incomplete, requiring another developer to finish the remaining work.
