🇫🇷 Virtual Assistant (VA) - Proofreading + Admin Tasks
This is one of the most disappointing experiences we have had on Upwork.
For context, we have been using Upwork since 2020, have posted 243 jobs, hired 85 freelancers, worked over 1,210 hourly hours, and currently have a 4.96/5 client rating across 51 reviews. We do not leave negative feedback lightly.
We hired Josaphat for an individual hourly VA / proofreading / admin role. The role required French proofreading, human review, attention to detail, and proper quality control on client content. At the beginning, the collaboration seemed promising. His test was good, and we trusted him with our internal processes, documents, client-related resources, and proofreading tools.
Unfortunately, the quality of the work later degraded significantly. We started receiving direct client feedback pointing out factual errors, misunderstandings, and weak editorial review in articles that were supposed to be carefully proofread. The work was no longer at the standard we hired him for.
The most serious issue is that we obtained evidence indicating that the work was being delegated to a third party without our consent, while the contract was billed hourly through Josaphat’s Upwork account. Upwork Support also confirmed to us that, on individual hourly contracts, the freelancer is expected to personally perform the work, and that having another person do the work without explicit consent violates Upwork’s Terms and Hourly Payment Protection rules.
This was not an agency contract. We did not hire a team. We hired Josaphat personally.
This also created serious confidentiality and security concerns, because we had shared internal tools, SOPs, prompts, and client-related resources with him — not with an unauthorized third party.
In my opinion, clients should be extremely careful hiring him on an hourly basis. If you decide to work with him, I would strongly recommend using fixed-price milestones only, with very clear deliverables, strict access control, and close quality review.
