I started freelancing on Upwork right after graduating from the University of Michigan. It was supposed to be a side project. It turned into the work.
The first thing I do on any project, before scoping anything, is figure out what success actually looks like for you. Not the features, not the design preferences, the outcome. More booked calls, better rankings, a site your team can update without calling me. Whatever the real win is, we work backwards from that. Sometimes that ends with "yes, I can build this." Sometimes it ends with "this isn't the right project for me, and here's why." Both are useful answers.
Once we're in, the work usually goes like this: a kickoff call to lock the scope, staged links so you see progress as I build (not just at the end), and clear handoff so your team can maintain the site without depending on me.
Most freelancers say yes to every client to fill the pipeline. I think that's the fastest way to underdeliver. I'd rather work with fewer clients deeply than more clients shallowly, which means I'm picky about what I take on and honest about what I won't.
