"My dog ate my homework!" "You're killing my channel, bro!"
This guy was in over his head, and took way too long to produce a video. Stay away!
Elvis is a capable editor and pleasant to work with. He is also receptive to creative direction from his client.
He is on the higher end of the pay scale for editors in his country, so I thought I would get what his profile promised.
Elvis's profile suggests that he can make videos quickly and effortlessly. That has not been my experience working with him. You should proceed with caution if you are looking for quick turnaround video production. I've worked with Elvis for 14 months, so I have a good track record with his output abilities.
He's produced three videos in that time: roughly 8 minutes, 13 minutes, and 23 minutes, respectively. Also, a couple of 1-minute shorts and a couple of thumbnails.
The first video never saw the light of day because it was off-topic and not aligned with my channel's purpose. I should have cut my losses then, but I was new to the process. Shame on me. It is risky and inadvisable to fire an editor midstream and assume the next editor can clean up the mess of a previous one.
I continued to work with him because I saw it as an investment in someone who could, hopefully, turn videos around faster in the future. However, I have my doubts.
I offered Elvis full-time hours and explained very clearly that I was an upstart YouTube channel with hundreds of hours of raw footage content to edit.
He assured me he could get the job done quickly and that he was looking for a long-term working relationship.
Once the projects got underway, it was one delay after another: "I've been sick, others have been sick, people have died, I had to visit family, marital issues, my computer crashed!; I'm moving; I'm a student, power outages, rendering fails, troubleshooting," etc.
"This round of edits took longer than expected..." was often cited, which suggests a skillset and/or bandwidth deficit (for rendering large files) that I'm paying for with hourly billing.
You name it, but practically every week there was a reason for another delay, and yet another delay. I get it: life happens. He might as well have thrown in, "The dog ate my homework!"
He's been very apologetic but, quite frankly, that hasn't done anything to help the completion times.
Even though I traveled abroad for several weeks, I was still in communication with Elvis, so his reasons for delay had nothing to do with me. Any delays on my end don't explain the delays on his end.
Elvis was available to speak with via Zoom and articulate in his Upwork replies. However, turnaround time has been a serious pain point in his execution. Maybe it's his evolving skill level or maybe it's life's circumstances that are the culprit.
He said he's been editing for three years, which is a lifetime in the world of social media, but also suggests he has a skillset deficit for the complexity my videos entailed. It's hard to say for sure, but probably a little bit of both.
Note: Insist your editor has the current version of any software editor they are using. If they skimp on expenses, it's going to cost YOU, the client, more time and expense. This should be a non-starter and non-negotiable! They should also have the latest technology, including a chip processor with an AI Experience.
Rendering took forever + 1 day! (Literally weeks for a 23 minute video!)
Implementing Frame.io was a game changer for streamlining feedback and collaborating on edits, but it didn't speed things up as I had hoped for.
Even after renegotiating the terms of our contract to penalize him for missed deadlines, he actually started moving slower.
He told me he is not working a full-time job, so it's perplexing to experience worse service after renegotiating his contract with penalties.
If you're not in a hurry to feed the algorithm of any social media platform (who's not in a hurry?), Elvis will probably do right by you, working you in around his life's issues.
But if you're trying to churn out long-form content quickly to grow a YouTube channel, he's not your guy. I PROMISE.
This experience resulted in producing an S.O.P. (Standard Operating Procedures) manual for my entirely new editing team, which should streamline workflow and expedite production output across the board.
Elvis's slow turnaround times forced me to interview several other editors and revamp my editing team by getting rid of slow, legacy editors. This is the only bright spot I can attribute to this experience: I have solid editors nowadays.
I wish I could rate Elvis higher, and even gave him ample opportunities and incentives to demonstrate his ability to produce faster, but it never materialized. Sadly.
