My name is Otaviano Junior, I’m 22 years old and I was born in Campinas, Brazil. Ever since I can remember, I’ve been guided by the sounds of the world around me. As a child, any noise — the rustling wind in the trees, the distant sound of a passing car, or even the soft clinking of a spoon — would transform into music in my mind. It felt like the entire world was offering me the notes of an invisible symphony, and I received them with awe.
That passion led me to musical instruments. With no formal lessons, no teacher, I taught myself to play the guitar — an instrument that remains the heart of all my compositions. Each chord I discovered opened a new door to my inner world.
But behind the melodies, my journey has not been easy. At a young age, I faced one of the greatest challenges of my life: I was diagnosed with schizophrenia. A word so often surrounded by stigma and prejudice — to many, a synonym for “madness,” as if my mind was a place no one could understand. And for a long time, that’s exactly how people saw me.
But I never accepted that label. Writing about my schizophrenia today doesn’t scare me, because I truly believe we must break the taboo around this condition. If someone with depression or diabetes can talk about their illness openly without judgment, why should schizophrenia be any different? It’s a medical condition that can be managed — and I am living proof of that.
Thanks to proper treatment, I live a normal life. Of course, there are side effects, but nothing that can stop me. What really keeps me going — what gives me strength — is music. It’s where I can be myself, where I express every emotion, every thought, and every feeling that words often fail to capture. It’s not just about the sound — even the titles of my compositions tell my story — a story of overcoming, of love for art, and of freedom.
Today, I am a composer of classical and ambient music, creating soundtracks that tell stories without words. My mission is not only to create music but also to show the world that schizophrenia doesn’t define me — just as it shouldn’t define anyone. Music is my voice, and through it, I communicate with the world — with no filters, and without fear.
