For audiobooks, I summon the venerable Neumann U87i (1979). A microphone so iconic it practically wrote its own fan letters.
For everything else where it makes sense, the Sennheiser MKH 416 storms in like a tiny, hyper-precise commando, unafraid of echoes, doors slamming, or the occasional rogue cat.
On rare occasions, I roll out the Neumann U87Ai (1991) for those who cling to the myth that the “industry standard” is some kind of magical talisman; though anyone with ears will immediately notice it’s no U87i.
Audio is captured via a Neve 88M interface, treated with the dignity of a knight at a royal banquet, fed the finest clean power, and occasionally whispered to that it’s performing tasks of epic, possibly universe-altering importance.
