Many vocal artists specialize in one particular thing, such as song, gimmicky voices (think Yoda or Jar Jar Binks), even tone, etc. Many vocal artists can do so some of other specializations, but excel at theirs.
My specialization is wide-range, and is one of the more difficult ones. Wide range is difficult to replicate, and a wide-range actor can often do the job of multiple background voice actors.
Some examples:
• Little Red Riding hood talking as she turns into a werewolf
• Being able to perfectly coordinate an argument between a father and daughter (since with the same voice actor).
• A possessed priestess slowly descending into madness as the demon king takes her over (instead of having to switch voice actors partway through, you can be sure of a slow & steady transition that can catch listeners unawares)
• Having the same voice being able to be done in different tones, which is great for 'gender swap' episodes of shows.
• Ability to make a character sound like they have taken serious damage that affects their breathing.
• Ability to voice more characters with a single actor.
All in all, wide-range vocals are great for effects.
