Most people come to sales calls defensive and with their guard up. What I tend to do early on a call is I let them know I'll ask questions so I can figure out if I can help. If I can't - I'll say it. I don't bring desperate energy to my calls. I let my prospects know it's ok to say no - I won't lose sleep over it. That's when they start to let their guard down and a conversation starts.
