As a Canadian-born child of German parents, my first language is German. I attended English-speaking schools but continued to speak German at home, as well as on frequent family visits to Germany. My bilingualism made it easier for me to learn French, and I developed a love of language. This fascination for the idiosyncrasies between languages and a desire for perfection led me to pursue languages at the undergraduate and graduate levels, eventually leading to a career in translation, technical writing and editing. I completed my undergraduate studies in French and German. As a part of my undergraduate studies, I spent one year in France and another in Germany, which improved my language skills immensely. On my return to Canada I completed my M.A. in French, in which I focused on translation. In the five years following my graduation, I worked as a technical translator from French and German into English.
