INTRODUCTION I'm a sharp and adaptable freelance writer, researcher, and editor, with an unusual talent for strengthening arguments and ideas. I have the academic expertise and research experience to back that talent up, and the compositional skill to put it to use. Working together, we can turn a rough draft or a good idea into an extraordinary piece of writing. BACKGROUND & QUALIFICATIONS I’ve been doing this for about five years, first as a grad student and now full-time. My clients have published in top journals, won major grants and contracts, and earned positions at Harvard, Stanford, and MIT. You can find a double handful of my own published journal articles on Google Scholar or ResearchGate (as Matthew Isaac Harvey), and I'm happy to share samples of other work. My degrees are a doctorate (ABD) in Language & Communication from the University of Southern Denmark, an MPhil in Linguistics from the University of Cambridge, and a BA in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science from Vassar College. I currently work part-time as Assistant Editor for the Elsevier journal Language Sciences. Before starting my own business, I worked as a contract hire for two professional editing services, Wordvice and Dissertation Editor. PROJECT TYPES I specialize in research-based articles. That includes blog posts, white papers (both marketing and informative), thought leadership pieces, and academic journal articles. I also do some branding work, including web page rewrites and brand voice guides, and edit nonfiction books and dissertations if I'm familiar with the field. If you aren't sure about a project, reach out directly and I'll be happy to talk it over! Thanks for taking the time to check out my profile. I look forward to helping you produce elegant, eloquent, and satisfying writing.Academic WritingContent EditingWebsite ContentWebsite CopywritingContent RewritingContent WritingResearch SummaryWeb Content DevelopmentBlog WritingCopywritingArticle WritingScientific Research - $145 hourly

I bring focus, curiosity, and enthusiasm to every piece of writing I tackle, no matter the subject or scale. Rather than toot my own horn, though, I'll share my client testimonials: "Nina is a born copyeditor with laser vision for the right syntax, grammar, verb agreement, and simple clarity of thought. When proofreading my recently completed book manuscript, she made dozens of unsolicited copyedits on several chapters. They were so insightful, precise, and often brilliant that I was forced to make many more (valuable) changes than I had intended. She spotted a number of substantive and grammatical issues in my text that, as the author of 12-plus books of nonfiction, simply had not occurred to me." "Nina is an extraordinary writer who is detail-oriented and devoted to her work. We continue to be impressed with her writing and diligent work ethic. She also goes above and beyond to make sure we have everything we need all while being consistently reliable, attentive, and communicative. Overall, Nina takes her work very seriously and handles each writing assignment with great care. Any team would be lucky to have her." Having found more than eight years of success as an Upwork freelancer, I'm excited to put this valuable experience to work for you in producing compelling content. As a detail-oriented, assiduous researcher, I'm constantly striving for perfection. Criticism is an opportunity for growth, so clients should always feel free to tell me where I've missed the mark. I pride myself on being well-organized and am committed to finishing projects ahead of deadline. Want to learn more? I have a PhD in anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley, where I studied sociocultural and linguistic anthropology. My doctoral project focused on indigenous language politics in Quintana Roo, Mexico, and continues work I undertook for my BA honors thesis at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where I graduated Summa Cum Laude. Building on my academic career of over ten years, I have extensive experience in academic writing and editing, and have always received excellent feedback on my style and clarity. Writing comes naturally to me, and I enjoy the challenge of perfecting the details of a paper, grant application, or other text. Writing my dissertation was a process which imbued me with a breadth of observational, analytical, and expressive skills. My four years of experience teaching and grading for anthropology classes at UC Berkeley involved working closely with students on their written work, amounting to an intensive training in effective and efficient proofreading and editing. Additionally, I worked in conjunction with a highly respected professor, helping to verify research, compile an index, and copy-edit an academic book which has since been published by the University of California Press. I have won various grants and awards based on the merits of my intellectual vision and accomplishments. I am a native English speaker and speak fluent Spanish, which I also read and write at an academic level. I have experience translating texts from Spanish to English, and editing texts written in English by non-native English speakers. The majority of my professional history lies in higher education. I have extensive experience designing and leading training for employees and students, constructing curricula, managing projects, and planning, executing, and managing programming. Since March of 2023, I have worked for the Boston College, Connell School of Nursing, and NANDA-International, an international nursing organization. In this role, I respond to two supervising organizations and serve many arms of the program. I took the role in March, a few months shy of the NANDA-I’s biannual international conference. I had to immediately take ownership of my role as the primary point of contact for the conference. This involved building relationships, learning and improving systems, organizing materials, and ensuring that the conference went off without a hitch. The conference was a success, and I received extremely positive feedback from my supervisors and the attendees. I am especially proud of this because I also successfully defended my dissertation proposal during the conference without missing a beat. During the conference, I ensured that the minute aspects of conference facilitation were managed promptly, discreetly, and effectively. Simultaneously, I managed relationships with event staff, translated materials into Spanish and Portuguese for attendees, served the needs of the executive board, and fostered a joyful environment. I am also privileged to serve as the liaison for the Gordon Scholars Program, an international Post-Doctoral Scholar program in the Boston College Connell School of Nursing. In this role, I help the scholars acclimate to life in Boston, ensuring they have the resources necessary to advance their scholarship and build long-lasting relationships that continue today.Academic WritingMicrosoft ExcelQualitative ResearchDiversity & InclusionIntercultural CommunicationHigher EducationAcademic ProofreadingAcademic ResearchData ManagementTraining & DevelopmentEvent PlanningProject Management - $100 hourly
