Whether you are looking for a freelance journalist to jump into a breaking news situation or fact-check sources, a writer to craft a press release or social media content or an extra set of eyes on your cover letter or admissions essay – I’m here to help! As an experienced journalist, I’m adept at reporting on complex, varied topics and distilling information in a clear, concise way. I’m used to writing for a variety of audiences and telling stories that will capture a reader’s attention. My work has appeared in The Tennessee Lookout, The Dallas Morning News, The Tennessean, USA TODAY, Chalkbeat, MindShift, The Atlantic and more. My coverage has focused on education and children’s issues, policy and politics. I’ve reported on culture war fights in three contentious states (Texas, Tennessee and Florida) and am equally comfortable at a press conference at the statehouse as I am gathering oral histories and interviewing children. I also have a passion for helping others tell their stories – whether through reporting on marginalized communities, finding alternative ways to tell stories and bolster my sources’ voices, or by working with and even training or mentoring future writers. I am also an experienced educator, having worked with high school students, tutored elementary school-age students, taught adult GED classes and helped train undergraduate student journalists. I am available for freelance news assignments in Florida and across the Southeast as well as myriad writing assignments for your blog or business. I can conduct research (including academic research), proofread academic writing, fact check, and offer writing and editing coaching as well as work with students applying for academic programs or scholarships or workers crafting cover letters for their next dream position. For years, I have helped family and friends craft letters landing them acceptance in graduate school programs and scholarships! I am careful to only take non-journalism assignments that won’t conflict with my work as a freelance reporter. Eventually, I will likely return to reporting full-time but will continue to offer writing and editing services. To see examples of my work as a journalist, visit my website at megmangrum.com.
